I think your idea needs to be tweaked a little by tf86

In two respects.

1. I would eliminate Baylor and TCU from the equation. From an ND-centric point of view, the remaining schools can be lumped into two categories:

Traditional rivals (Miami, Pitt, Stanford, USC)
Schools that don't rise to the level of traditional rivals, but which have some important history with ND (BYU, Clemson, Florida State, Texas)

And it doesn't hurt that 3 of the 4 schools in the latter category are either traditional or recent superpowers in the sport. Baylor and TCU clearly are the oddball schools here.

2. While I'm unsure of your meaning of the word "alliance," I'm assuming that you mean a full round-robin among each of the members. While that would be ideal for ND, I'm not sure that it would fly with the others. For example, what benefit does Clemson receive from playing an annual series with BYU? And assuming, arguendo, that there is a benefit, is it substantial enough to justify Clemson leaving the ACC (a prerequisite for such a formation)? I don't think it is.

With all of that said, one of the things that worries me, going forward, is that each conference will wind up with more conference games, which in turn will make scheduling more difficult for ND. Toward that end, I think it would be an excellent idea for ND to contact each of these schools about the possibility of a long-term series. There's enough margin for error built in that ND won't be harmed even if 1-2 schools say no.

The most significant obstacle to that, as I see it, is ND'S deal with the ACC. However, I think ND has proved by now a sufficient value added to the ACC that ND should be able to renegotiate for greater control over the ACC portion of the schedule. ND could play the four ACC schools you mentioned (Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Pitt) on an annual basis, with a fifth game against another ACC member on a rotating basis.
