That wasn't really my point by pmcdnd96

I rushed through a post because I had a call starting and didn't really articulate my thoughts well.

What I meant was that we would have a theoretical shot at any of those kids; Vanderbilt does not. So it really doesn't cost them anything to throw the offer out there because if they somehow land one of those kids, it will be a huge success. And spending 10 minutes on Walter Nolen (#1 DT) isn't going to cost them much because their second choice is probably ranked somewhere in the 600 range. But let's assume we offered Walter Nolen and Mykel Williams (who I believe we have offered; #4 DL and #46 overall). Every second we spend on Nolen is a second we can't spend on Williams (or another player.) If Nolen is a very low probability and is only marginally higher rated than Williams, but Williams has a medium to high probability of accepting an offer, there is a point on the continuum where focusing all your effort on Williams makes sense. That is true regardless of how many wing-and-a-prayer offers Vanderbilt throws out there.

As I see it, the problem we have isn't simply that we've skipped those 16 kids listed above. To me, the problem is that we've skipped those 16 kids and others while whining about academics limiting us (which is BS) and while failing to go balls-to the-wall to land the Williamses that we are recruiting instead of the Nolens. If we're going to use this strategy - to focus on landing the most great players without any wasted time/effort - working our asses off to get the best players we can is absolutely crucial. And I don't think Kelly is doing that.

I don't think it's that Kelly is happy with being in the top 15 as opposed to the top 5. I think it's a little that Kelly is lazy and a lot that he doesn't know any better.
