This is the best explanation I've read with the fewest by BabaGhanouj

amount of words. [Always a struggle for Dillon 😉.] I highlight "The Alabama organization and it's governing body is right now hiding behind the literal letter of the law, not the intent and that's just lame leadership"

Of course that doesn't mean the distinction is trivial in all cases. Life can be complicated. (There is always a "however".)

Recall Sir Thomas Moore in A Man for All Seasons:
Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

However, I'm fully on Orangutan's and Dillon's side, here.
