N-N-N-N-Nineteen

The DePaul Blue Demons became the first double-victim in ND's current home win streak. They were the first back on March 4th of last year, and last night became the 19th as the Fighting Irish stayed perfect at home this season. 17 of those 19 have been this season, which sets a new record for the Notre Dame program for home wins in a season.

With 19 straight home wins, ND is now closing on another record -- the 24 wins in a row at the Joyce Center between February 1st, 1973, and December 11th, 1974, encompassing the entire 1973-74 season and parts of those that preceded and succeeded it. That represents the program's high-water mark in this facility. The current streak is good for third, behind the 22 in a row won between January 26, 1977, and February 12, 1978.

A win over Marquette on Saturday will not only put the Irish securely in place for a first-round bye in the EWSNBN, it will also make the Joyce Center win streak record a very reasonable goal for next season. The overall win streak record -- 38 in a row between December 11th, 1943, and February 9th, 1948 in the old Fieldhouse -- beckons after that, but one bridge at a time.

"We shall protect this house", indeed.

With the Marquette game coming up, I'm reminded of one of my all-time favorite responses to visiting fans making noise at the Joyce Center - the Marquette fans got a "We Are... Marquette" cheer going.

The students responded with "You Are... Marquette"

Event Which Shall Not Be Named.

AKA, the season-ending thingy the Big East has at Madison Square Garden which, like all of its bretheren in other conferences, is the bane of college basketball.

rOne of my most memorable moments at ND was the Marquette game during the 70-71 season. I was sitting (as a junior who had witnessed the great upset of UCLA a few weaks earlier) behind the south basket with just about 10 seconds remaining. Marquette had a 1 point lead and the ball. During the timeout they were all high-fiveing and congratulating the coach (Al McGuire)on their victory. I just remember some cocky blonde surfer type guard they had at the time that really got into the crowd at the ACC. In any case, on the inbounds pass Jackie meehan got a hand on the ball and tipped it to Austin Carr who scored a layup at the buzzer. Now remember, I was in the same seat when we beat Sidney Wicks and the UCLA dynasty several weeks earlier, but I will always remember that victory over Marquette

I hope the students at ND realize how big of a game this is. The Marquette students always seem to notice. Since Marquette has joined the Big East, they've brought a very large student contingent to South Bend for the basketball game each time they play at the Joyce (usually had a pretty good showing at the Boat Club and Corby's later, too). Just know, Marquette will be really fired up for this one, we had better be.
