Irish Overcome Mistakes, Eagles

Notre Dame emerged from its bye week but barely resembled the powerhouse that dismantled USC a fortnight ago. Their performance was marred by unnecessary penalties, special teams gaffes, and a red zone fumble. Despite these challenges, Marcus Freeman’s squad managed to defeat Boston College by 25-10 on Saturday. Notre Dame notched its sixth consecutive victory to keep its playoff hopes alive.

It was an ugly affair from the start. Both teams failed to generate much offense in the first quarter. A defensive holding call on third down kept an Irish drive alive as the period ended. CJ Carr immediately capitalized by throwing a 40-yard scoring strike to Malachi Fields. Noah Burnette’s extra point attempt clanked off the upright and the score remained at 6-0.

Eagle quarterback Dylan Lonergan subsequently overthrew his intended target and Tea Johnson intercepted for the Irish. Carr’s deep pass to Jordan Faison quickly moved Notre Dame into scoring territory. Just as it appeared that the Irish were shedding the rust and cobwebs of inactivity, disaster struck. On first and goal at the five-yard line, BC stripped the ball from Jadarian Price and took possession.

The newly energized Eagles began to move the ball as Grayson James took over for Lonergan. An unsportsmanlike penalty on linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa helped propel the Eagles into Irish territory. Notre Dame’s defense then stiffened as safety Luke Talich broke up a fourth down pass.

Boston College continued to load up against the run on defense, so Carr went back to work through the air. He threw for two first downs before hitting Will Pauling on a deep post from 44 yards out. Just under two minutes remained in the half as Freeman called for a two point conversion attempt. It failed miserably, and the Irish advantage stayed at 12-0.

Notre Dame wanted a defensive stop on the next series for another chance to score. James refused to cooperate, however, as he connected on a series of passes to march down the field. With time running down, James found Reed Harris in the end zone from 25 yards out. Harris beat Leonard Moore on the play to bring the Eagles within 12-7 at the half.

Irish fans expected their team to come out for the second half with hair on fire but the opposite happened. BC took the opening kickoff and embarked on an 11-minute march. Notre Dame appeared to have them stopped with a fourth down sack but the referees had other plans. They flagged Josh Burnham for a phantom facemask penalty on the play. We have seen some horrid calls this season and this one was easily the worst. Fortunately, the Irish held the Eagles to a field goal and clung to a 12-10 lead.

Carr finally got his hands on the ball and made the most of the opportunity. His 30-yard pass to Eli Raridon fueled a drive that ended with a Jeremiyah Love touchdown. Again, a Notre Dame kicker badly missed the extra point in this dark comedy of errors. Boston College was still within one score at 18-10 as the final period got underway.

James and the Eagles appeared to be stopped when a third down desperation heave sailed out of bounds. In keeping with the theme of this game, the Irish incurred another unsportsmanlike penalty on the play. Jaylen Sneed was the offender as he obviously shoved James when he was well out of bounds.

BC now threatened to score as the Irish defense dug in. They finally elected to apply pressure to James after sitting back in coverage most of the afternoon. Results were immediate and favorable. James was running for his life when he lofted an ill-advised pass toward the goal line. Adon Shuler intercepted at the Notre Dame six-yard line before stepping out of bounds.

Eleven minutes remained in the game as the Irish offense returned to the field. On the first play from scrimmage, Love found daylight after being bottled up all day. A great downfield blocking effort by Fields took care of the final Eagle defender. It was the same play Love took to the house against Indiana last season. Notre Dame now led by 25-10 as they finally converted an extra point.

Chris Ash wisely maintained the defensive pressure on James down the stretch. Boston College had three more chances in the waning minutes but the Irish forced incompletions and recorded sacks. Carr tried to add a clinching score but the offense continued to display ineptitude on third and short. Notre Dame even attempted a fake punt during this stretch but BC was ready for it.

A final hurried throw by James became Johnson’s second interception of the day, and the Irish ran out the clock. It was a merciful ending to three-plus hours of suffering by Irish fans. Freeman undoubtedly aged in dog years during this calamitous affair, but his team lives to fight another day.

Let’s review the answers to our pregame questions:

  • Will BC’s ground game be stuck in first gear without Turbo? Richards played but was obviously not at full strength. The Eagles gained a net 12 yards rushing.
  • Can Carr demonstrate the passing skills that were evident earlier this season? CJ threw several excellent deep balls with just one miss where he overthrew Fields. Carr finished with 299 yards on 18 for 25 passing.
  • Will Notre Dame run successfully against whatever scheme the Eagles employ? No. BC jammed the box and blitzed the run gaps all day. Only Love could break their hearts with his long scoring burst.
  • Which team will win the turnover battle? Notre Dame fumbled once but had three interceptions.
  • Can Notre Dame’s special teams provide another innovative highlight? No, but there were a few epic lowlights. Two missed extra points, a failed chip shot field goal, and an unwise fake punt were abominable.
  • Will the Irish secondary hold Bond in check? Bond had eight receptions for 92 yards before Ash decided to pressure the quarterback.
  • Can an Irish kicker make a middle or long-range field goal? If you’ve read this far, you know the answer.
  • Will Notre Dame’s pass rush make life miserable for BC’s quarterbacks? Only in the fourth quarter but that was enough.

Notre Dame hosts Navy next week and had better not take anything for granted. Even an extra point.

  1. Ugly win. Blame has to spread around. Lack of creativity in the offensive playcalling early, coupled with Price’s fumble, kept BC in it. Also, credit to them for playing with toughness and seemingly more energy. The good news, after today’s events, I think ND controls destiny to a playoff berth.

  2. Ugly!!! Blame has to be spread around. Offensive playcalling lacks creativity, price fumble kept BC in it and the 3rd quarter 12 min drive had a comedy of stupid on the Irish and refs. With that said, the Irish got enough help to firmly control their own fate to a playoff berth. 4 winnable games away from another CFP berth.

  3. Good job as always, John. First playoff rankings should be interesting, and there’s a lot of season left. Apparently my plea to the coaching staff to find a place kicker has fallen on deaf ears. What a dumpster fire that part of special teams is! But, just win, baby….and let’s see where it takes us. Go Irish!

  4. Hello John,

I know it was a sloppy game, but I will take this type of win any time!!! Thank God the defense had a good outing!! However, still a little frustrated with these stupid celebrations by some of the players. John, why can’t the players just do a simple high five or a fist in the air, etc….instead of a cut throat gesture. It is totally uncalled for. Again this type of behavior hurts the TEAM!! GOOOOO IRISH BEAT NAVY!!!!!

      • Holtz would’ve taken Kyngstonn & Sneed by the facemasks and sat them down and inserting highly recruited subs who care more about Team and winning than their Notice Me BS.

        Jim Blaum ‘72

    • I like hot dogs when they’re cooked in boiling hot water, then immediately put into a lightly buttered bun, with onions, mustard and just a tad of ketchup, with a cold one to wash it down.

Otherwise I don’t care for them.

  5. This game raises a number of very upsetting red flags: 1) ND continues to commit stupid penalties, 2) the kicking game is worse than atrocious, 3)the O-line has regressed, 4) the red zone offense is pitiful, and 5) the Irish lacked motivation and discipline which is a function of poor coaching. It the Irish play like this against Pitt in two weeks they can kiss their CFP aspirations goodbye. An interesting statistic for this team would be the number of points ND has left on the field this season because of mistakes, idiotic play calling, stupid penalties, and atrocious place kicking. I’m really beginning to wonder if Freeman is spending too much time reading his press clippings about how every university wants him for their coach. Marcus needs to re-focus on the task at hand…the 2025 Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Give credit to Chris Ash. He and his defense are now carrying the Irish. I had high hopes for this team but now I’m really, really discouraged. Pop Tarts Bowl, anyone???

  6. Sloppy, undisciplined and lethargic. Far from a playoff caliber team tonight. “we need to get this fixed” is getting old and suggests there’s only one thing that needs fixing. I trust Coach sees multiple things that need to get fixed. Also, where’s the accountability for players selfishly committing these bone headed personal fouls? For example, how does KVA stay in the game after his antics that kept a BC drive alive? . Then we do it again with the late hit out of bounds. It’s maddening. C’mon coaches, c’mon players – you’re way better than that AND YOU HAVE TO SHOW THAT EVERY GAME!!!

    • ND fan in the South says:

Our team is entitled to one of these games a year where they play with little intensity, stupidly, miss the spread by two TDs, and still pull off a win. It could have been worse (NI last year). Perhaps this experience serves as a wake up call and a refocus to winning out and making the playoffs.

  7. It would have been worse had ND lost but it was a painful win to watch. Hopefully over the coming weeks Freeman and his assistant coaches will figure out how to successfully fix the various issues with place kicking, short yardage plays, and red zone offense.

  8. John, thanks to YouTube and Disney, I didn’t get to watch the game, so I appreciate you for the recap. I guess I should be thankful that I didn’t have the chance to watch the game. My flatscreen got a reprieve from profanity hurled from yours truly. Anyway, the Irish survived Fredo!

  9. Once again this coaching staff grades out with an F. Coach Freeman did not have this team motivated or ready to play against a lousy opponent and they display a lack of discipline which results in stupid penalties. Chris Ash always looks befuddled on the sideline and his defense allowed an infuriating 11 minute drive that took up almost the entire third quarter. Mike Denbrock is overrated as an offensive coordinator with truly unimaginative play calling. Special teams are a comedy of errors. Kudos to CJ Carr and Love on offense and Bowen and Josh Burnham on defense. But this is not a playoff team.

    • ND fan in the South says:

Don’t lose faith, Topgome. This win moved us to the top 10 in AP. I suspect we will in the top 12 after CP Committee meets tonight. So we have opportunities. Coach Freeman can use this sluggish, mistake-loaded performance as a motivating springboard to achieve two goals: Win out…and make the playoffs with a shot at a Natty.

  10. Play Offs? You’re talking Play Offs for a team that muddled through a 1-7 team?
Why do these Marshal and Northern Illinois moments continue to happen this deep into Freeman’s tenure as HC? You can’t find a place a kicker anywhere in this high school football centric nation??? Fire special teams coach today!
We are ND! When will we play like Champions again??.
Again and as always Vannie, your critiques are spot on. Thank You!!

    • Every team plays a couple lousy games against weak competition. It happens. But this inability to gain a yard on third down tells me our stud lineman aren’t really studs. The place kicking is as awful as it’s ever been. Why? Go get a freaking kicker like everyone else does! And wouldn’t our chances of converting fourth and three be better with our regular offense than some totally predictable, bizarre fake punt? The throat slash penalty? What could that kid possibly have been thinking? Stupidity at it’s highest level. Want to be in the playoffs? Start looking the part.

      • ND fan in the South says:

Your criticism is well-taken. A good script for Coach Freeman to use….And I could imagine him unloading on the team in a similar, but much more intense manner.

  11. We lost the middle of the game (the end of the first half and beginning of the second half) again. This time it was 10-0 to a 1-7 team. This period of the game is normally called the middle 8 but BC made it the middle 13. I guess I should look at the improvement as we lost it 14-0 to Miami and Ash’s brilliant half time adjustments resulted in only 3 points for BC as opposed to the 7 for Miami. You really can’t spin this sort of incompetence you can only hope to hide it among all the other mistakes.

  12. Thank you John for your post-game analysis.

I imagine there was a lot of effective chatter on the field. BC was keeping things close; the Irish were helping them do that; and I imagine some players lost their bearing in all of it. Last year, that did not happen- this year is different. As for some of the dumb penalties (like Sneed) I think they should come out and sit a while…. think about playing time.

Our stretch run plays are becoming a little easier to stop. The 1 Back set does not keep off-side pursuit at home, so, it looked to me like ‘hey everyone, go where Love/Price go’. BC was set up for counter plays, but we don’t run those. Hopefully we can have some check-downs when our opponents load the box instead of just running into it.

All that said, we did win a game we may have been meant to lose.

At this point, we most likely will get into playoffs, but Pitt might have a say in that. If we do get in, some things need to be fixed if we expect to stay in.

    • You are right about Denbrock’s failure to adapt to an overloaded run defense. He’ll run one counter play that works well and never comes back to it.

      • Is it the kicker or the holder? How can 3 kickers be so bad? At least no out of bounds kickoffs. Although most were short of goal line. Was this the ‘fix’ for that problem? A lot of teams were upset so I guess we should be thankful we weren’t one of them. Maddening that we continue to play to the level of our opponents.

        • If it were the holder, they would have made a change by now. They used three different kickers in this game so that should tell us where the problem lies.

The short kickoffs were a result of a relatively strong wind throughout the game.

  13. At least we ended up on the right side unlike 1993 and 2002. Are Freeman and the staff perfect? No, but perspective demands that we thank our lucky stars we don’t have a Baton Rouge style dumpster fire on our hands rather than complain about a 15 point road win against a well-coached and determined opponent. That said, yes, we need to address the kicking game.

  14. TumorGoByeBye says:

1-Agree with comments above, esp BMac. John methinks you are being charitable, and perhaps listening to this one on the radio was not so bad! I too am tiring of hearing that things will be “addressed with urgency” and then we see the same silliness week after week. Dumb penalties, comical kicking, red zone inefficiency. Any one of those things can make the difference but all three are difficult to overcome unless you’re playing BC.

2-Probably naive on my part, but until yesterday BC had 6 losses and Navy had 0 losses. Could it be that they spent a lot more time on Navy than letting on? I sure hope so.

    3-Greathouse. What’s the deal?

    • Greathouse has a hamstring injury that is not quite 100%. They don’t want to play him until they’re sure he won’t reinjure it again and be out for another month+. I suspect he and others on the injured list are being held out until the Pitt game.

  15. ❤️#501988☘️🏈💪🏻 says:

ALL WEEK I SAID DON’T LET THIS BE ANOTHER ’93 DEBACLE AND IT ALMOST WAS!!!!🤦

AWESOME JOB DEFENSE!!!!!! YOU GUYS CAME TO PLAY!!!!

Go to the guys soccer team and recruit a FRIGGIN KICKER!!!!!

This lack of preparedness or whatever it is by the coaching staff is ALL to familiar! The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde routine is getting to be ridiculous!!!!

I hate to say it. But the committee is going to use this game as reinsurance that ND doesn’t belong in the playoffs regardless of what ND this season. I for one WILL be surprised if ND makes it. But I’m afraid they aren’t. I guess we’ll see. 🤷

    • At 10-2 ND will be in the playoffs. May even get another home game. We have problems to address but look around college football and show me a team that doesn’t have flaws equal to or greater than ours? Maybe Ohio State?

      • ❤️#501988☘️🏈💪🏻 says:

I hope you are right! Yeah all the simulations have the ☘️ playing Buckeyes in the next round. We’ll see.

      • #❤️501988☘️🏈💪🏻 says:

You know as well as I do ND is treated differently compared to other teams regardless of how they are doing. ND’s margin for error is so small. You are right, 10-2 at the beginning of the season the metric said ND would get in. Now they are changing the GOAL POST to make sure ND doesn’t get in.

  16. BC was behind by only a TD against Louisville with 4 and a half minutes to go in that game. I am not surprised they (and Irish mistakes) kept it close. I would send a scout to any of our internal games to find a kicker. Or maybe across the road to HC or SMC for a good soccer player with a killer leg.

  17. The unsportsmanlike penalties reminded me of Coach Holtz telling his players to act like they’ve been there before. Need a different running scheme for those 3rd and 2 to go. If they don’t pressure Pitt’s QB, I don’t think we can win.

  18. An ugly win is still a win. If the Irish play like they did here they will get slaughtered in the playoffs. If they play like they did against USuCk they will make some noise. Remember we are watching 18-22 year olds and sometimes they act their age. Go Irish.

  19. Brandon Aubrey……probably the best kicker in the NFL today. Played four years on ND’s soccer team. How did the staff NOT see or hear about this guy at the time? Makes you wonder if there’s another gem currently playing soccer that could kick an extra point?!

  20. ND needs style points in every game and they failed to get them against BC. This was a butt ugly win and ND managed to get worse coming out of the bye week just like they did under Brian Kelly. The kicking game is a real concern and at some point it will lose a game for ND. It actually already did against Texas A&M.

ND has been inconsistent, sloppy and mistake prone most of the season so if they make the playoffs I expect them not to last beyond the first round.

  21. ED CHRISTOPHER ND '67 says:

John, good analysis. ND once again left pts. on the field. Three extra pts.- two kicks and a two point try,
a thirty- yard FG and a fumble on the five. (13 PTS.) I read somewhere that the Women’s soccer team has a player that kicked for her HS football team.

The Defense played well, but allowed time consuming drives aided by the officials. (phantom face mask,
    unsportsmanlike conduct)

ND is still playoff worthy due to the parity in college football. Hey, even Ara complained about “moral losses”,
but we won the game! Just win next week. GO IRISH! BEAT NAVY!

  22. I had the same frustrations yesterday as expressed by many here. The team that showed up last night did not look like a playoff team. This morning, after my first cup, I remembered some very flat performances by Holtz’s teams — for example, Cliff Jefferson making a game-saving tackle against Army; losing at home to Stanford as time ran out while ND had all three unused timeouts. The lack of imagination in the running game is the most troublesome issue to me but then I remind myself we had the same issues last year and it all worked out pretty well. Hopefully we will get Schrauth and Jagusah back later on.

  23. A little nervy –for BC it was their Super Bowl, for ND another win with the pressure on. ‘Disciplined’ teams like GTech got manhandled by a cadre of NC State 2nd teamers. ‘Great’ coaches and coordinators like Vandy’s looked completely outmatched, unprepared, inconsistent, sloppy. Kirby Smart got lucky again. Mario Cristobal? Brent Key? Umm…. Another week in CFB and Freeman’s team manages to play hard, overcome questionable calls, funky kicking game, and win

    • Yes, a win is a win. After all this chatter about how awful we played against BC, we move up 2 places in the AP as other ranked teams had a much worse Saturday, and continue on a good path the the playoffs. Gotta love college football.

    • ND fan in the South says:

Let’s hope this is a wake up call (remember NI). I see us winning out. We have way more talent than the 4 teams we face. We will be pretty heavy favorites in each game. Just need to play to their capabilities.

  24. ND will struggle to beat Pitt even if they play well as they did against USC. I watched OSU w 3 NFL 1st round receivers & Sayin ( slightly better than Carr) & a quick fast defense – they will be difficult to beat. Hard to see the Irish winning two CFP games.

    • Mike the Third says:

Pitt is 3rd in ACC having put up big numbers against common opponents NC State and BC; a strong Pat Narduzzi team with a bye week to prepare. They certainly would love and can play spoiler!

  25. JV, thanks for the article. It was an ugly game and I’m I have a theory why? Freeman has been calling for violence in play and while I’m a fan of it, it comes with baggage. It appears to me it carries over to a few hyped up players doing stupid things. if you look at other teams with the same philosophy they always have players creating the same thing. Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia and Miami a few years back to name a few. The coach has to teach that violence in the game means to play hard not stupid.

  26. ❤️#501988☘️🏈💪🏻 says:

You know as well as I ND has a different metrics when it comes to playoffs because WE won’t join a conference.

  27. ND fan in the South says:

We didn’t win by the spread (29.5). We were sloppy, sluggish, undisciplined and down right lousy, with a few exceptions. But we won! And we continue on a path to make the playoffs. I have faith in MF and his staff. They will find a good place kicker, correct the undiscipline, reduce or eliminate stupid penalties, and beat Navy in a very big way.

  28. There were unnecessary penalties, but the phantom facemask was not one of them. The third down shove out of bounds was stupid, but didn’t lead to points. Overall, the Defense played well. BC had no running game, and a very inefficient passing game. BC would not have been able to stick in a conservative mode if ND would have played cleanly on special teams, and missing kicks with three different kickers, plus a 2pt as a consequence, is astounding. It’s hard to account for that and Price fumbling again in the redzone. They outgained BC 458 to 281 but won by 15 because of the kicks and fumble.

Good teams pull together big plays when they dig themselves a hole on the road and they did that. They can’t look past any of their remaining opponents again if they want to stick their landing.
