Notes From the NDWBB Awards Night
by MPG (2024-04-23 18:27:40)

1. I can confirm that Carol Owens was at the airport and that caused her to be a few minutes late as Coach Ivey noted when introducing the coaching staff. The King family probably went straight to their hotel because I did not see them.

2. Hannah Hidalgo won Best Defensive Player, the media MVP award, gave the closing prayer, and shared the team's MVP award with Sonia Citron. Fr. Monk Malloy gave the invocation

3. Maddy Westbeld was named Most Improved Player and seemed truly happy to confirm that she will be returning for next season.

4. Sarah Cernugel and Cass Prosper shared the spirit award.

5. Jenna Brown, Sarah Cernugel, and Anna DeWolfe received senior awards and spoke about their time at ND. Jenna's speech about the ups and downs of her six years of college was the most eloquent as she related missing 1,000 days of basketball between her final game at Stanford and her first game at ND. She also mentioned that the death of a close friend was another burden that she carried.

6. There is a chance that Sarah Cernugel will return next season. Reading between the lines, it may depend on finding the right grad program for this computational math major who won the team's academic award.

7. Anna DeWolfe had the best one-liner of the event as she asked the staff to make certain that they save two tickets for her when ND advances to the final four next season.

8. KK Bransford and Kylee Watson were both there on crutches which was especially sad to see when compared to how vibrant they looked when seen in the season highlights video.

9. I was surprised that Natalija Marshall and Becky Obinma were not in attendance. I hope that this was not a sign that they are graduating with some ill feelings toward the coaching staff.

All nice other than part of point 2. Would that Monk receded

permanently from any sort of affiliation with Notre Dame. Yes, he's an alum and sadly President Emeritus. He's also a stain, and apparently has been for a very long time. See BI's post linked below:

Sorin about him, before condemning him today on the basis of decisions he made during his presidency or an anti-war protest during the Viet Nam era. I was in AFROTC at the time of that protest in 1967, but wouldn't have known him, if I saw him. Of course, I was keeping my eyes focused while I marched...

He continues to live in Sorin and seems to be well-liked there, as well as being a long-time supporter of NDWBB. I know some ND graduates who took his university seminar class for freshmen and reported that he was an excellent teacher and mentor.

Monk was there in my time

His interactions with us seemed down to earth, which as a student was amazing. I was always aware that he was not well liked as Pres. Jenkins was there my final year and I had several good talks with him.

I will do so. While his actions now may be nice, they do not

absolve him of his earlier misdeeds or the continuing effects of his disastrous tenure as president. Priest or not, he will get nothing but scorn from me. If that sends me deeper into purgatory (if I am lucky), then so be it.

Thx for Recap.

- Hoping that Nat Marshall wasn't there due to extenuating circumstances, such as visiting a potential landing spot for next year. Her departing message seemed too sincere to hide/harbor any resentment. At least that's the hope.

- With KK's return, seems safe to say the focus for reinforcements from the portal will be on the frontcourt. From what we've heard/read, there's been (at least) a post (Weimar), power/stretch forward (Karlen) and now a small forward (King) on ND's campus. We'll see what permutation Coach Ivey chooses/is able to land.

Thanks for the recap. As for Becky…

…Eric Hansen (link below), stated Becky is petitioning for a 7th season, and if granted, will play elsewhere. Not a shock…
