The data we have shows cordoning off the old and sick didn't work in the long run. Their infections correlated more or less with societal numbers.
The other issue was that ICU's were full of mostly 50 to 80 year olds. And poorer people who did more societal necessary things were more likely to be chronically ill (diabetes, hypertension, etc.) The view that covid was only a danger to those in retirement homes was horribly misguided/a way to try to say our real problems didn't need to be solved.
