the US government is down-playing the citizenship angle of those hostages, in order to not make them (the hostages) more valuable to Hamas. As others allude, the more upset we seem, the more valuable the hostage is. And the media is playing along.

On the other hand, creeping anti-semitism (in the media) would suggest either the press doesn't see these hostages as real Americans, or views them as proper targets due to their "settler colonialism."
