Multiple news outlets are reporting Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey has signed a 10-year extension that will keep him at the school until the end of his coaching career.
The two-time Big East Coach of the Year has been Notre Dame’s head man for 13 years. This new extension will take him through 2021-22 and, likely, retirement.
There is a press conference scheduled for Tuesday at 11am ET. UND.com will carry it live, and we’ll have a link to it on The Pit.
A link to the official release is here.
Scranton Dave says:
Very nice move for the Irish! Way to reward a great job by Brey!

Good for Mike Brey and the Irish!

Why ND will accept mediocrity in a sport like men’s basketball is beyond me. Swarbrink says every sport should be in position to compete for national championships. That will never happen under Mike Brey and hasn’t 12 years proven that? Another 10 more years of getting excited about making the NCAA tourney as opposed to doing well in it. Ugh
El Kabong says:
Jack Swarbrick: “We’re in the business to win NCAA Championships and if I didn’t think Mike Brey could win an NCAA Championship in basketball, we wouldn’t be sitting here today. I believe he can. I believe this program can. Mike’s done all the hard work. He just has to win six games in March now.”
Mike Brey: “Now we’re in a mode of thriving in the Big East; we’ve shifted gears. Those big dreams you want to dream, they’re worth dreaming now. We’ve got to do a better job of figuring out how to get us there in March. I think about that every day.”
They’re just happy to be there. Right.
Rjbjr Irish says:
Sorry, El Kabong, but nothing that Coach Brey has done in the past gives me any confidence the team will win the Big East Conference, win the Big East Tournament or reach the Final Four as long as he is the coach. I don’t know what the answer is, but I know it isn’t Brey.
Farsdahl says:
This was a no-brainer. A school like ND needs a coach like Mike Brey because he can take an underrated three-star player who can meet our academic standards (Quinn, Gody, Abro), develop their talent and scheme to their strengths. As for settling for “mediocrity,” I have no doubt that Mike Brey will have us in the Final Four at least once or twice before he retires. If you’d rather be a fan of a coach that relies on nothing more than fishing for five-star one-and-dones, may I suggest that the ACC is full of schools that would be more to your liking.

I’m happy for Coach Brey and the ND community!

That’s a good move for the coach and for ND.
