Irish in the Zone Against Pitt

DeShone Kizer threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score as Notre Dame overpowered Pittsburgh by 42-30 on Saturday. Freshman Josh Adams came off the bench to run for 147 yards in relief of an injured C.J. Prosise, and Will Fuller accounted for 152 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Irish defense played a solid first half as Notre Dame built a 21-3 lead, but suffered numerous lapses in a sloppy second half.

The Irish started fast by taking the opening kickoff and striking paydirt in only three plays. The drive was a perfect illustration of how a successful running game effectively sets up the play action pass. Runs of 19 and 9 yards by Prosise and a 47-yard strike from Kizer to Fuller covered 75 yards in just over one minute. After Pitt answered with a field goal later in the period, Kizer led Notre Dame on another scoring march capped by a 12-yard pass to Torii Hunter.

The defenses settled in during the second quarter, and an interception by Matthias Farley stopped the only Panther scoring threat. As halftime approached, Fuller broke loose again and hauled in a 46-yard bomb to give the visitors a 21-3 cushion.

Pitt got its attack going in the third quarter, while the Irish continued to roll. Neither team punted during the next 20 minutes of the contest as each offense recorded two touchdowns in that time frame. Midway through the final period, Kizer capped off the scoring for Notre Dame by walking in from two yards out for a 42-17 advantage with only 5:47 remaining.

The Irish finished on a sloppy note by allowing a 51-yard scoring play from Nate Peterman to Tyler Boyd, and backup quarterback Brandon Wimbush’s fumble on the ensuing series was returned by Pittburgh’s Ejuan Price for a 32-yard touchdown to account for the 42-30 final score. Fortunately for Notre Dame, the offense was perfect in the red zone by recording seven points on each of its four trips.

Notre Dame effectively shut down Boyd until the waning moments and played reasonably well against the run. Peterman hurt them on several occasions with long gains on scrambles, but he was only 12 of 31 in the passing game. Freshman defensive back Jordan Whitehead was outstanding for the Panthers. He had 11 tackles on defense and made a successful debut on offense with two touchdown runs in the third period. Punter Tyler Newsome returned to form for the Irish, averaging an impressive 52 yards on four attempts.

Let’s review the answers to the pregame questions for additional insights.

Can Notre Dame get back to running the ball with authority? Yes, and this paid dividends immediately as seen on the opening possession.

Will Pitt’s other receivers and tight ends contribute big plays against the Irish? Dontez Ford and J.P. Holtz made a few plays, but not nearly enough as they each had costly drops.

Which defense will be able to put heat on the quarterback? Both teams had a few sacks and pressures, but the Panthers got the better of it. Peterman’s scrambling ability negated some Irish pressure and Price’s fumble return took away a few style points from Notre Dame.

Will the Panther secondary be able to stay with Will Fuller? Shockingly, Pitt did nothing special to cover the Irish speedster, and he torched them.

Can Notre Dame find a way to convert its red zone opportunities into touchdowns? A big improvement here and the key to a comfortable victory versus another nail biter.

Will Pitt try to sneak Dan Marino and Tony Dorsett into its backfield? Thankfully not, although Mike Ditka seemed to be looking for somebody to punch out as the Irish piled up the points.

Can the Irish finally take control on the road and enjoy an uneventful second half? Yes and no. Notre Dame took control before intermission and was never in any danger of losing, but the finish was almost as ugly as the Georgia Tech game.

Which Assistant Coach will deserve to be coldcocked by his boss? Ditka might want to clock Panther Head Coach Pat Narduzzi for allowing Fuller to run past his secondary all day.

Notre Dame advances to 8-1 on the season and await the results of a few significant matchups today that are certain to alter the positioning of teams vying for a playoff berth. The Irish play their final home game of the season against Wake Forest in what will be a home farewell for players such as Sheldon Day, Nick Martin, Ronnie Stanley and quite possibly Jaylon Smith and Will Fuller. Regarding Prosise, his status is unconfirmed at this time but initial reports indicated his injury was not serious and he may return to action next week.

  1. Overall, a very solid effort..until we lost focus with their 2 gift TDs at the end….

Thankfully, their many dropped passes in the 1st half helped us build a nice lead…

Our pass defense is still very shaky but a good win today… Hopefully CJ will be ok but Adams did a great job in his absence….

    Go Irish!!!

Can’t believe Narduzzi didn’t double Fuller.. Arrogant decision.. Fuller is the one of the
    best in the country!!

Great win.. Great offensive game plan.. We pounded them like we’ve all been
    waiting for..

Two Pitt touchdowns at the end of the game needs to be cleaned up before Stanford!!!

Need to tighten up our “Pass D” as TC 69 mentioned already..

I wanted “style’ points and I believe we got them!! Great win for the Irish!

  3. sloppy ending to otherwise great effort!
    11-1 looks very doable
Question is – will that be enough to get in w/ no conference champ game?

CCB I think there’s pretty solid agreement that if ND knocks off Stanford in Palo Alto, an 11-1 ND gets in before other single loss teams, esp if Clemson keeps rolling. Many former and future ND opponents won this weekend and some unbeatens were handed their first loss. All good things. I think it’s safe to say that they do, in fact, control their destiny and make playoffs with 2 more wins.

  4. Time to start to ask some questions about Todd Lyght’s work with the secondary. I haven’t seen much improvement all year. Defense still a big question to me. Too many big plays. Luckily lots of drops and misses by Pitt. Kizer continues to impress. Keep the pedal to the metal next week. Go Irish.

  5. A question for anyone that has a replay of the Farley interception. I thought he landed in the end zone with the momentum carrying him in. I didn’t see any knees down outside the end zone. Why was the ball placed on the one yard line?

    • Good Post – I was fired up when the Ref did not take the ball out to the 20 – Farley appeared clearly to land in the end zone. Also, if you watched the game clock closely towards the end, seemed the guy upstairs who controlled it was doing a lot of fiddling with it. Then prior to the final ND snap to end the game, there was clearly only 6 seconds left. Then, miraculously, after a minute later when on 4th down, ND decided to run a play from scrimmage, ANOTHER second magically appeared on the clock when it INCREASED to 7 seconds…. Maybe Ditka threw his gum up in the booth and it landed on the clock control…

    • Terrible call. Clearly was a touch back. If I recall correctly, there was a similar pick by Temple which resulted in a touch back and the player actually ran it in to the end zone.
Thankfully, it didn’t matter, the offense was great. Defense made enough big plays to get the job done. Hope Prosise will be back next week – we can’t afford to loose any more depth at RB.

    • I was watching and Farley’s feet came down at the 1yd line but his knees went down in the end zone which should have been ruled a touchback. It also appeared Pitt’s people were trying to keep time on the clock near the end of the game. There was a running play where the clock didn’t start until Josh Adams was getting tackled instead of when the ball snapped. I suspect the Pitt clock people were trying to keep as much time on the clock to help in the event of a comeback.

I was in the garage cutting metal in prep for building a welding cart, and I think the hogs up front wanted to do the same, because they went 3rd shift pipe swinger against ol narduzzi’s defense. I’ve never felt more like a man than breathing in metal shavings, watching the Irish kick the living shit out of Pitt up front. Running the ball up the middle, busting people in the chops, maulers! That’s some Irish football right there!

Whatever goes through redfields brain needs to short circuit, because I don’t think he knows what sport he’s playing. Blown coverages, missed tackles, he looks like he forgot how to football. Todd lyght, c’mon man, lets salvage this kid and get something out of him. Just goes to show that being a 5-star recruit doesn’t guarantee anything at this level; play YOUR position homes!

I digress, this one was glorious, especially after that dump-fest in 2013. Now gentlemen, if you excuse me, I’m going back out to the garage to breath some more metal shavings and howl at the moon.

    Go iriah

  7. Good overall win but thankfully it was PITT. Any good team would have punished our team during the 2nd quarter offensive debalacle! Completely out of sync and once again the o-line had no push whatsoever. The 2ndary should have been torched if PITT receivers didn’t have so many drops. Russell is just useless back there and not sure Todd Lyght has any clue how to coach up these guys. Once again where was Joe Schmidt? Why is Nyles Morgan not getting any snaps? Kizer continues to impress and Adams steps in and very impressed with his running. Hopefully CJ is ok because he and Josh would be a powerful tandem back there!

  8. Great win on the road by a great team! Nuff said! Hope CJ gets well soon but really as long as we have him back full strength by Stanford I’m feeling good. Kizer continues to pleasantly shock and is putting up some sick numbers. Why isn’t Fuller getting much Heismen talk???

  9. Was at game. Nice to see all the Pitt fans leaving early. Offense looks awesome. Unsure if Defense can hold up to OSU and Bama. Can’t get a pass rush, WR and TE are wide open, and having trouble with that one critical stop that can really put dagger in teams. There is elite talent on this team, lets hope they can put it all together.

  10. The no-look defensive back play will cost ND a game if not corrected. ND left 2-3 interceptions on the field by not looking back for the ball. Playing the ball is a must do and not an option…if ND db can not play the ball, they should not play at all.

  11. I agree with the comment by Fitz. Fuller should be on the Heisman watch for sure!! He is amazing and I just pray he stays healthy. And hopefully CJ will be back but rest him in Wake Forest game so he’ll be 100% foe Stanford. Great season with adjusting to our injuries. And please , secondary, learn how to tackle and read the passes or Stanford will kill us. Go Irish .

  12. To my mind, still not playing to their full potential. Great individual efforts but not playing as a team for all four quarters, especiaily the defense!

  13. Great win but lost style points with very sloppy two plays at the end, Defensively Schmidt needs to sit. Another game of missed tacked, over running plays, manhandled by blockers and inability to get to the QB on blitzes, We need much better play at that position than he is giving.

  14. Good win for the Irish despite the sloppy end. I don’t think going 11-1 is enough to get into the playoffs. An undefeated Baylor or OSU will leap frog the Irish. Let’s hope they all beat up on each other because a one loss Irish will get in over either. I don’t think the Irish defense is strong enough to win it all but the downfield passing of Kizer gives us a chance.

  15. Interesting team, have superior talent to most opponents, but appear to be rather nonchalant the majority of the game. The best team they played in Clemson, gave them fits, but they adjusted the offense in the end of 3rd qtr and picked up the defensive intensity to play even with them. Had BK not decided to go for 2 with 14.5 minutes remaining, they would have been in OT. What worries me is the O-line will have issues with Bama or OSU if they get to the BCS playoff, but if they keep building they’re within 2 years of BAMA caliber, but the front 7 needs a lot of improvement, did you see the Bama linebackers against Fournette?

  16. A nice afternoon became a really goodnight when ND received some help from Navy, Temple and USC to keep the “good wins” intact along with the biggest loss being by TCU. If the Big 12 can beat each other up over these last 4 weeks I think we will get in. We aren’t getting in over an undefeated Power 5 conference school under any circumstance. The committee is not going to set that precedent. I think there is a better shot that the all the Big 12 teams receive a loss then the Big 10. Most realistic outcome that includes ND in the final 4 would be: 1 Clemson 2. Alabama 3. Ohio St. 4. Notre Dame

And considering the amount of injuries we have faced the fact that’s even a real possibility speaks to the overall great recruiting job BK has done. Over the years he has received his fair share of abuse and I never understood it. We haven’t had a coach that was even in his stratosphere in 20 years and then he comes along and many cried for someone better. If they reach the playoff this season he will have given us 2 incredible seasons in the last 4 years and almost every school not named Alabama would sign up for that.

  17. Mike, the Brian Kelly Era is so far and away the best we have had since Holtz. Maybe you could counter that’s not saying much but I would argue that most who don’t like Kelly would at least concede his recruiting has been excellent overall. Just take a look at the QBs we have right now and throw Golson into that and we have 4 who could start at almost every program. We’ve come along way from the train wreck coaches over the last 20 years and brought credibility back to the program. After living through the last bunch of coaches I cannot fathom how anyone would complain about who we have unless you were/are under the delusion Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, or Nick Saban would ever take on this tough a job. ND is the Kentucky of basketball except we have real student athletes. Come on let’s give him his due. The job is brutal and he has performed admirably.

    • I’m not complaining, I’m merely pointing out statistics that don’t necessarily mean what people think.

One great season sandwiched within four mediocre ones. That’s not my standard for Notre Dame. This season certainly is going well, and I’ll be very happy if it continues to do so.

  18. .583 Davie
    .583 Willingham
    .565 Weis
    .712 Kelly
Win Percentages since Holtz… Hes not at Holtz (.765) level yet but lets say they win out and they play in Final 4. whether they win or lose that, he will have produced 2 great seasons in his first 5 which is about as good as anyone could’ve ever expected and exactly what Holtz produced.

***I love Lou Holtz I think we all can agree he was a great coach/motivator/recruiter and if he is the gold standard then all I am saying is Kelly might be pretty close when its all said and done and is doing it in a much tougher ERA of college football with tougher recruiting standards.

    • Sorry, “best since Holtz” doesn’t do it for me given how awful and unacceptable his predecessors were. And I’m not a fan of the “tougher era” qualification either — the “tougher recruiting standards” are tighter than NCAA average, but not nearly as tough as most people think they are. ND likes the story, though.

  19. Good debate—Your not convinced about Kelly I understand— The sting of the Alabama game and the loss to FSU which imploded the season last year sucked mightily but I come from a position as a man in his mid 30’s who has seen very few good ND teams and definitely no sustained success. Lots of past rah rah we are ND stuff but the performance since the 80’s so far and away doesn’t meet the storied history. For me it does speak volumes to how Kelly has gotten the programs equilibrium back. To lose the amount of key players this year and be in contention is coach of the year type stuff and you can say the recruiting standards are overblown but no big names wanted to take the job so it must have some merit. The first time you were to tell Saban or Meyer sorry coach that kid cant get in here he would be handing in his resignation. You think the standards are overblown but your not being fair because as soon as I take away 25 of the top 40 kids and 40 of the top 100 and say you cant have them whose to say that’s overblown?
