Major health insurance companies are nearing too big to fail

A worthwhile thing to remember as they continue to balloon in size, absorb the bulk of Medicare and Medicaid, and simultaneously shift their risk (defeating the whole purpose of insurance in the first place) to physicians, hospitals, and taxpayers.

Is there any possibility of UHG being made to divest

some of their health services/analytics/physician groups or other ancillary companies? They are the 900lb gorilla and to the extent that other payors are acquiring it is to attempt to keep up with UHG.

I doubt it very much

On a side note, the other payers may very well just be trying to keep up, but they are also acquiring other healthcare entities because (a) as United has made clear, it gets you around the MLR rules from the ACA and (b) it makes it easy to manipulate utilization so that premium dollars become a lot more predictable to budget around.
