That doesn't sound like the fan was wired to code.

Your neutral wire at the fan from the switch should be white or gray. And I also believe that you can't use another color and simply mark the ends. It has to be appropriately marked along the length.

It sounds like you have two separate hot wires plus a single neutral and the ground. This would allow you to wire a light and fan separately. You need to figure out which of those three wires are the hots and which is the neutral. My guess would would be yellow is neutral, because someone wirking red or black to neutral (both of which are meant for hot wires) is evil. The safe way to do this is to turn off the breaker and then use a wire continuity tester to know which wires at the switch correspond to the specific wires at the fixture.

Either way, good idea to have the electrician make sure everything is installed to code.

Edit: And I'll add, if both red and black were live hot wires and you wired them both to the fan, if it wasn't dead before...it may be dead now.
