Ewell officially off the 85-man roster.

The enigmatic football career of junior nose guard Darnell Ewell is over but apparently not his academic pursuits at Notre Dame.

ND head coach Brian Kelly told the Tribune that Ewell will take a medical hardship, a move that leaves the Irish at the NCAA-mandated scholarship limit of 85.

“He’s had some issues relative to the stress of the game and academics and managing all that’s going on,” Kelly said. “I can’t get into the specifics of it. He’s staying in school. He’s going to get his degree. He’s excited about his future in terms of academics here at Notre Dame, and that’s a good thing.”

I showed ND was already at 85 with Ewell

And it's JD Bertrand, not Bartlett.

I see in the linked article that Deon McIntosh signed with

Leach at WSU. Good for him.

CJ Holmes will be eligible at Penn State this fall.

It'll be interesting to watch those 2 guys. Both had a lot of promise before they ran into off the field problems. Holmes was buddies with Stepherson..a bad choice..and not sure what violation of team rules means exactly but that got McIntosh.

Sounds completely above board *

Ewell does have a lot going on.

I would certainly hope

that we're using the medical scholarships for kids with legitimate medical issues.

"Isn't really good at football right now" isn't a medical issue. "Can't crack the two deep," "doesn't want to work," "wants to play a different position" are also not valid reasons IMO.

note--I have no idea why this kid is getting a medical scholarship at this point. My point is one of a bigger picture nature.

Agreed. Apparently this rule is becoming as malleable

as the one for obtaining waivers for immediate eligibility after a transfer.

Is there an NCAA rule that says you have to have a medical

reason to stay on scholarship if you are no longer on the team? I'm not aware of one.

A medical waiver from the NCAA is needed

for a recruited scholarship player to leave the team, stay on scholarship, and not count against the limit of 85.

Does that mean ND has to file paperwork

with the NCAA, reports from Team MD's, Trainers, etc or players personal MD's/Trainers to get the Medical Waiver?

I don't know what goes into the waiver request *

It offers a player an opportunity to finish his degree if he is unable to play up to his potential due to injury or recurring injuries. This would include guys like Cory Robinson who could have played but chose not to do so due to concussion issues. We had a linebacker who took a medical last year, kid from Pittsburgh I believe. He could have probably given it a go but again I think it was a recurring injury and he chose to move on from Football.

I don't know what Ewell's injury is, I tried finding out but I couldn't find out what it was. But unless this is a total fabrication, like a Workers Comp Scam, I am totally ok with him saying No Mas Coach I don't want to play anymore and moving him to a medical hardship, even if maybe he could have played if he worked hard on his rehab and stuff like that.

I get your point but I'm sure Corey Robinson' Dad can afford
