Man City’s dominance, in perspective
by HTownND (2017-12-31 10:55:50)

Over the last 10 matches (which represents over 25% of the season) Chelsea has gone 7-1-2 for a total of 23 out of 30 possible points.

That is 77% of the possible points. A pace that would, over the course of a season result in 87 points.

Here is where 87 points would have put teams the past 5 years:
16/17 - 2nd
15/16 - 1st
14/15 - 1st
13/14 - 1st
12/13 - 2nd

So basically Chelsea has been at top of the table form for 25% of the season.

Over that period, Man City has gained 5 more points than Chelsea basically putting the league out of reach. Their point pace has been blistering.

This year, after 21 matches, over half the season, Man City has 59 out of a possible 63 points. A pace of 107 points on the season.

This is the most dominant season I’ve seen since I started following the EPL during the 99/2000 season. Chelsea’s 95 points don’t look to hold up this year, and I suspect it won’t be close.

How could we rate it relative to competition?

I don't know the answer statistically, but the PL is not what it used to be from an eyeball check perspective and far too many top players spread across European leagues now.

Chelsea 04-05 still stands out in my mind as superior.

Seasons of 96-99 had the most competition among top 3-4 teams IMO. The best part about these seasons was the intra-week drama of the FA Cup before it became watered down.

07-08 was pretty amazing too.

The PL isn’t so bad

That this run should be that diminished. They went 5-0 I’m advancing to the knockout of the UCL.

Do they have the top team in Europe? No, but how many times has an EPL team won the UCL in the last 20 years (ie who we are comparing them to)?

I agree there is more parity in Europe, but not so much that it would diminish this season that much.
