Indeed, the numbers from Manchester do speak to their willingness to splash the cash for big names. But net spend is also a reflection of running a good business by investing in the right kind of talent and cashing in when it's right. At the end of the day, Liverpool's books might look balanced, but selling Coutinho and buying Van Dijk, Keita and Salah with a neutral spending number is simply shrewd business.

A more telling number is wages. How much is a club willing to pay their superstars to keep them happy?
