Two years ago, one of our posters, SanBarIrish, brought the board the story of former Irish player John Mazur. John and his wife, Bernadine, were in tough financial times due to John’s NFL pension not being what it should. We put the full story of John and his situation here.
SanBarIrish posted an update yesterday:
In a recent phone conversation with John’s wife, she gave me an update on the current status of John.
His condition continues to deteriorate, given his long term-battle with Parkinson’s disease. It has reached the point where he is no longer able to care for himself. He can no longer walk and his wife cares for him much as one would care for a six-month old child. It is a 24/7/360 job.
The NFL has never increased John’s pension since it was awarded to him in 1980. The Mazurs live very frugally with the limited resources they have available. For the past two years, readers of NDNation have been oustanding in offering financial support to John and his wife, Bernardine, which has helped them tremendously.
Just as important as the funds received are the many letters of encouragement they have received from the Notre Dame family. In spite of his long time spent in the NFl as a head coach and assistant coach, John only hears from two old friends from nis coaching days. It is those supporters of Notre Dame who are the primary sources of emotional support for John and his family.
If you care to assist the Mazurs financially, you may send donations to them at 672 Cornwallis Dr, Mt.Laurel, NJ 08054-3217.
If you cannot make a donation at this time, they would also appreciate a note of encouragement and support. In any case, mention that you are part of NDNation.
Once again, in the Christmas season, one of our own looks for help. Times are tough right now, no doubt. But if you’re planning on some charitable giving, give John and Bernadine some thought.
