They both want to be able to make a claim to a high ranking if the season gets curtailed, which will help recruiting. Clemson has made a living off its ND victories. The 2015 ND-Clemson game covers one wall of their cafeteria.

Schedule. And IMHO, an early season contest offers the best opportunity for the game not to proceed according to form.
