I took Matt Brown's tweet at the link and updated it to include Purdue's victory on Saturday against Iowa. Six(6) of Purdue's 13 victories have been against Notre Dame (1950, 1954, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1974).

On the ND size, Holtz did it six times, as many as Ara and Leahy combined.

Most all-time wins against AP top-2 teams

Notre Dame 17
Ohio State 16
USC 16
Oklahoma 14
Purdue 13

The mention I heard at the game was slightly different

Most wins vs. #2 all-time as an unranked team. That is what gave Purdue the edge.

That is a separate stat and yes, Purdue leads there.

Matt Brown also threw in yet another category. These tweets were posted on Saturday before the Iowa game went final.

Lou had at least one other elsewhere, beating No. 2 Oklahoma

on 1/1/78 31-6. With No.1 Texas having gotten stomped by ND earlier in the day, the NC was Oklahoma’s to lose. They just had to beat an Arkansas team that was missing the players who had accounted for 80 percent of their offense.

Then there was the near miss re No. 1 Colorado in the Orange Bowl with the bs clipping call on Rocket’s return with 43 seconds left.

I would have also said W Va in 1988 but checked and they were ranked 3rd. Penn State was also 3rd in 1986 when we came within inches of knocking them off. At least they went on to win the NC by ruining Miami’s NC run.

In Googling some of this, I found this article about some of his more recent contributions.

He deserves a 1/2 National Championship at ND for that one. *
