Has anyone seen the documentary “The Russian Five”?

Holy cow.

I confess to not having followed the NHL. I knew that the Wings had gotten good, I knew who Sergei Federov was. That’s it.

I had many thoughts about the first 90 minutes of the documentary, but they are all out the window now. Two words: limo driver. Can’t even believe it. What. The. Hell. Is. Your. Malfunction.

Anyway, “The Russian Five” is very well done. Find it.

Saw it. I also thought it was quite well done.

I grew up in Michigan and as soon as my older sister got me into hockey I was a Wings fan. I slogged through the Dead Things era, wondered if I'd ever see a new banner hanging from the Joe Louis rafters the first time I was in the building, and was miserable with each inexplicable failure in the post season in the 1990s (every year from 1991-1996).

When they finally won it all in 1997 it was, at the time, my most enjoyed sports moment by a country mile.
Wings fans got 6 days to enjoy something many of us had waited decades for. Even the Cup win the following season seemed more like something endured than something enjoyed.

The limo driver claimed to have fallen asleep, and while maybe that was true, he was later found to have metabolites for marijuana in his system. He spent a brief time in jail, did some community service and went through court-ordered drug and alcohol abuse counseling. Somehow seemed inadequate for the damage he caused.

The last three minutes of the thing destroyed me.

I just can’t even believe what a loser the driver is/was. No excuse for it.

Lidstrom and Konstantinov together for another 10 years...

...would have been a sight to see.

I don't think I'd ever get into a limo of the type

the players used. Safety regulations on the vehicles (they are often heavily modified after coming off the factory floor) are not enforced vigorously. I think there are issues with the certification of the drivers (the driver of the Wings limo was also reportedly driving on a license that had been revoked due to a previous drunk driving conviction). In addition, studies show people who would not think of being in their own vehicle without buckling up often do not use seatbelts while in the limo. Wear your seatbelts folks. If you are in a vehicle that is in motion and there is a belt available, put it on. Please.

Agree on the quality. *
