missed a pull-up mid-range jump shot. Those seem automatic, particularly when AO is running on a break.. The stats you cite are amazing.

Yes, that pull-up jump has been looking good and it also

gives defenders something else to think about as Arike comes down the court. I am a fan of the mid-range game even though some stats people believe that only threes or lay-ups are worth taking.

Midrange shots can be killers, especially for guards if they

can hit 70%+. Arike is in that class when she pulls up and pops.

Agree with each of you

As MPG says “some stats people believe that only threes or lay-ups are worth taking”, which has unfairly denigrated the mid range game. If you can hit 70% of your pull ups, as Domerduck says, who needs lay-ups or 3 point shots?

This isn’t rocket science …well, unless you start figuring in possible fouls or turnovers from passes setting up each type of shot. (Remember True Shot Percentage? 😉) It’s pretty simple:

50% x 2 = 1.0 = 33.3% x 3
55% x 2 = 1.1 = 36.7% x 3
60% x 2 = 1.2 = 40.0% x 3
65% x 2 = 1.3 = 43.3% x 3
70% x 2 = 1.4 = 46.7% x 3
75% x 2 = 1.5 = 50.0% x 3

If Arike is hitting 70% of her pull up jump shots, then there are very few 3-point shooters (other than Lauren Loves of Denver - 50%, Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon - 49.4%, or Dara Mabrey of Virginia Tech - 48.1%) who can compete. Interestingly Arica Carter of Louisville is in that conversation with 46.4% from 3-pt range, but we saw what happened there in the Louisville game.

Note, I didn’t include all NCAA players who are shooting 3’s at over a 46.7 clip, but there are currently only 12.

Now, the question is, is Arike hitting 70% of her pull-ups? I’ll leave it to someone else to do that homework.
