Irish Burn Pittsburgh

Ben Hansbrough controlled the game tempo running Notre Dame’s “Burn” offense the entire game en route to 19 points and a 56-51 victory in Pittsburgh.  Carleton Scott added 16 points and 9 rebounds including 5 out of 6 from three point range.

Pitt entered the game sporting the #2 national ranking with a 19-1 record, 7-0 in the Big East, and a 20-game home winning streak.  It had been scoring 79 points per conference game and had the best rebounding margin by far.  Mike Brey’s answer was a stubbornly slow tempo that frustrated the Panthers the longer it lasted.

While Hansbrough, Scott, and the Burn will get a lot of credit, ND’s defense should not be overlooked.  Pitt entered the game making 49% of its three point shots and 52% from inside the arc on its home court, but the Irish held it to 40% from both distances with a mix of aggressive zone and stifling man-to-man.  Leading scorer Ashton Gibbs made just 4 of 13 shots for 9 points.  Gilbert Brown led the Panthers with 13 points.

Pittsburgh entered the game leading the Big East in rebounding margin with a remarkable +9.3 per game; and true to form, it comfortably won the battle of the boards against the Irish 29-23.  However, the Irish outrebounded the Panthers 5-0 in the last minute to secure the victory.

Scott Martin kept the Irish in the game early with three 3-point baskets in the first eight minutes.  His marksmanship drew ND even in the middle of the game.  Then Hansbrough took the ball.  A pair of free throws, a nice assist on a basket by Jack Cooley, and a three put the Irish in front with 8:29 to play; and they didn’t trail again.

“We just couldn’t contain him (Hansbrough) off the dribble,” Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said after the game.  “I was surprised with how he was able to beat us.”

After the media timeout, a nice pass from Martin got Scott a three and a foul.  He converted the four point play when Brad Wannamaker fouled him, and ND had a five point lead.

Pittsburgh was not about to die easily.  Brown, Gibbs, and Wannamaker each made tough baskets in the lane; but Hansbrough answered with a drive and a basket each time to restore ND’s two possession lead.  Martin added a pair of free throws with 2:09 to play, and the game was Notre Dame’s to win or lose.  A Wannamaker layup with 1:26 to play was all that Pitt had left.

Final score – Notre Dame 56, Pittsburgh 51.

Keys to Victory

In the preview we said, “The Irish handled Cincinnati’s and Marquette’s pressure defense, limited turnovers, controlled tempo, shot well, contested shots, and held their own on the boards.  That is exactly what they need to do to beat Pittsburgh… or any other good team on the road.”

  • Against the pressure – Pitt tried to extend the defense times; but ND beat it every time, and the Panthers backed off.
  • Turnovers – The Irish had 10, two on shot clock violations which will happen once in a while when the offense doesn’t start until there are 12 seconds left to shoot.  Pitt had just 7 points off of turnovers, ND 8.
  • Tempo – Yeah.
  • Shooting – The Irish shot 49% for the game, 61% in the second half, and 50% from three point range.
  • Rebounding – Pitt dominated until late in the game, but ND owned the boards with the game on the line.

Noteworthy

  • ND’s victory is its first in six tries at the Petersen Events Center. The only teams to defeat Pitt twice at the Pete are Georgetown and Louisville.
  • Notre Dame now has a three game winning streak against Pitt.
  • Pitt had trailed for a total of five minutes in seven Big East games before chasing the lead for 8:29 against the Irish.
  • Asked about the challenge of playing a short turnaround game on the road, Hansbrough said, ““I think my body was definitely fatigued, but the fire on this team wasn’t. Coach Brey did a great job of giving us a day’s rest and getting our energy back up.”
  • Halfway through the Bug East schedule, ND is 6-3.
  • Next: The Irish will visit the Allstate Arena to play DePaul on Thursday, February 3rd.

Huge win! The Irish are set up for a run at a bye in the Big East Tourney, and a possible 3 seed or even 2 seed in the NCAAs.

  2. I love this team….Just look at the court IQ of this team and then the will of Ben. The last two games the deployed a zone (which they rarely play) to great effect to take Marquette out of there rythm and then last night they go burn the whole game and beat the best team in the conference on the road.

Who else can do that…….not even most pro teams have the IQ and maturiry this years Irish squad does.

They are beating teams that are athletically superior with moxy, poise, and basketball skill. It really is a thing to savor.

This team plays good ‘playoff’ type basketball and if healthy has a chance to win the BE or NCAA this year. Most importantly they believe they can. The schedule does setup nice now with a well deserved break then we ease back in with two winable games before another showdown at home with Louisville. I don’t forsee a letdown and I thought 11 or 12 BE wins was possible this year and it looks better than ever.

Also, I hope the last two years has shut up the Brey haters for a while. Brey is a tremendous coach, a very active member with both the students and the community. He is a big clog in the conference and the NCAA rules. He is greatly respected by a lot of people in basketball. On top of all that he is a nice guy. I have run into him around town several times in the last 10 years and he has talked with me like I was an alum. Anyone who can’t see that ND is never going to be a power in basketball is blind. They can’t get the studs and even when they do have one they have one…….top teams will have several studs on the floor that are draft picks. Plus the studs don’t fit NDs mold. All the top kids play 1, maybe 2 years and then move on. ND wants 4 year players and graduates its players.

So Brey does really well with what he has and even he is morphing promoting more defense and this new ball control ‘burn’ offense the last two years. He recruits good kids and somehow we have become a haven for quality transfers. I would say we have been at the top of the second teer of BE teams and that is saying something. Plus look at the home experience….something like 36-5 the last 4 years. Not a lo to be dissapointed about when you go to a home game because it is a good time, seating is great and they are going to win……..

Thanks Mike Brey you are a class act and I hope you stay another 10 years and then happily retire…..also you more than deserve a gig at one of the powers so if you leave for Duke I would be sad but you would deserve it. Thanks for being so loyal as no one even mentions you for jobs every year and that is not because you are not deserving but obviously because you have made it clear to people that ND is where you want to be.

  3. Now, this was a basketball game! Team play, passing, breaking, follow ups, and excellent shooting. All I needed was a 2 handed set shot to send me into orbit! Great play, IRISH.

CJW- Recruiting is picking up. The commits they have for the next 2 years are higher rated then what they usually get. Great post again though

  5. Dave,

Thanks….don’t follow BB recruiting as much as the FB side. I would love to see ND get a super duper guy like Digger was able to do a few times in his day.

  6. I could not agree more on the analysis on Mike Brey. The team seems able to adopt whatever style of play necessary to win on a given night. Also remarkable is the fact that Brey has found the vulnerabilities of opponents to employ the multiple weapons that the team capably employs. I do worry about not regularly playing a few more of the reserves though. Basketball is a grind and it would be nice to have a few more guys getting minutes to prove they could plug in quickly in the event of injury or fatigue.

  7. AT THE TOP LEVEL I BELIEVE IT IS DEFENSE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE. I HAVE THOUGHT IN THE PAST THAT MIKE BREY FOR WHAT EVER REASON DID NOT BRING HIS TEAM TO EXCELL IN DEFENSE. I HAVE SEEN THIS YEAR TO BE QUITE A BIT IMPROVED IN THIS FACET. NOW IF WE DON’T FALL BACK AGAINST DEPAUL LIKE IN PAST YEARS. QUALITY WINS FOLLOWED BY LOSSES TO LOWER DIVISION TEAMS. IS THE FIGHT BACK IN THE BASKETBALL TEAM TOO??????????????
