`Mitch Jeter’s 41-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining gave Notre Dame a 27-24 victory over Penn State in a heart-stopping slugfest at the Orange Bowl. The Fighting Irish fought back from 10-0 and 24-17 deficits with their trademark grit and determinaton. Notre Dame earned the victory despite losing the turnover battle and surrendering over 200 yards on the ground. Quarterbacks Riley Leonard and Steve Angeli outplayed PSU’s Drew Allar, however, passing for 267 yards against Allar’s 135.
This was the 13th consecutive win of the season and 14th overall for the Irish. More importantly, it earned them a spot in the national championship game on January 20 in Atlanta. What is most gratifying is the way the team responded to adversity against a tough, talented opponent. Notre Dame looked slow and fatigued at the outset as the Lions seized the initiative early. Somehow, the Irish found a reserve that ascended after intermission as the teams began to trade haymakers.
Penn State dominated the first quarter as the Irish. Safety Zakee Wheatley intercepted an errant Leonard pass midway through the period. After a methodical march, the Lions stopped themselves when Nick Singleton dropped a pass at the goal line. Ryan Barker booted a short field goal to open the scoring as the second quarter commenced.
Notre Dame could not answer and lost left tackle Anthonie Knapp on the ensuing series. Knapp suffered an ankle injury and did not return to action. The Lions regained possession on their own ten-yard line and began to dominate the line of scrimmage. Singleton capped a seven minute, 15-play drive ended with a five yard scoring run to make it 10-0.
Leonard tried to respond in the last two minutes before intermission but was slammed to the turf as he released a pass. Guard Rocco Spindler went down on the same play and was done for the evening. Steve Angeli came in at quarterback and immediately breathed life into the passing game. He hit Aneyas Williams and Jordan Faison with crisp passes to move the Irish into field goal position. Angeli was six of seven on the drive and Jeter closed the gap to 10-3 as the half ended.
Notre Dame looked like a different team in the third quarter. They took the opening kickoff and raced downfield as Leonard hit Williams for 36 yards on a wheel route. Leonard covered the final three yards to tie the game at ten. The teams then exchanged punts as the anxiety level rose in the stadium and behind my keyboard. A third down sack by the Irish gave Leonard another opportunity as the contest approached the final stanza.
Leonard hit Jaden Greathouse for 17 yards to move the chains. Jayden Thomas ran for another 18 yards on a jet sweep to move into the red zone. Tight end Eli Raridon then drew a pass interference penalty at the two-yard line. On the next play, the Irish took their first lead of the game. Jeremiyah Love fought through four tacklers and stretched the ball over the goal line for a 17-10 advantage. It was the best two-yard run these eyes have ever seen.
Fourteen minutes remained, and Penn State was far from finished. Allar hit Tyler Warren for 27 yards and the Lions were off to the races. Singleton scored again from seven yards out to tie the game just three minutes later.
Unfortunately, Leonard tried too hard to answer. He underthrew his first down pass and Dani-Dennis-Sutton made a diving interception at the Irish 39. Allar appeared to return the favor but an interference penalty nullified Jack Kiser’s interception at the goal line. Singleton crashed into the end zone for his third touchdown and a 24-17 PSU lead.
Notre Dame took possession with under eight minutes remaining on what appeared to be a do-or-die drive. Leonard engineered a couple of first downs before lightning struck. Greathouse put a move on his defender, who slipped to the turf. Leonard delivered the ball in stride and Greathouse juked the safety before waltzing into the end zone. The 54-yard play tied the score at 24 with 4:38 still on the clock.
Both defenses rose to the challenge and forced punts on the next two series. Allar and the Lions took over at their 15 with just 47 seconds left. After having two interceptions negated by penalties earlier in the game, Allar’s third gaffe was catastrophic. Under pressure from Jaylen Sneed, Allar threw an unnecessary and ill-advised pass late over the middle. Christian Gray made a diving interception at the Lion 42 with 33 seconds remaining.
Coach Marcus Freeman had his three timeouts and quickly strategized how to get his team into field goal range. Another clutch third down catch by Greathouse did the trick. Leonard added a few more yards on runs to center the ball and get as close as possible. Jeter’s kick appeared to drift to the right but suddenly the Hand of God guided it left and comfortably through. Penn State’s final razzle dazzle play went nowhere and the Irish celebration began.
This season’s playoff wins are getting more difficult each week but the Irish are still standing. Notre Dame tripled its passing yards from last week and the offense was more productive overall. They outgained the Lions by 383-339 yards. Their opponent in Atlanta will be determined on Friday. Ohio State is favored over Texas, although that means nothing right now. Whoever wins will have its hands full with this Incredibly gutsy Fighting Irish squad.
Let’s review the answers to our pregame questions:
- Which team will establish its tandem of tailbacks and win the ground war? Penn State had 204 yards rushing as Singleton and Katron Allen were impressive. Notre Dame managed only 116 yards with Love gaining 45.
- Will the Irish be able to make life miserable for Allar in the pocket? Not exactly miserable, but Allar was a meager 12 of 23 for 135 yards. As noted above, his interception was thrown under pressure.
- Can Leonard maintain poise and accuracy downfield? Another roller coaster ride with Riley. He had two poorly thrown interceptions that could have lost the game. He also tossed a few excellent passes that essentially won it.
- Will the Irish secondary have an answer for Warren? Warren was as good as advertised but the Irish did not let him beat them.
- Which team will avoid costly, game-altering penalties? Both teams committed a few. Two pass interference penalties cost the Irish a pair of interceptions. A similar error by the Lions set up Love’s touchdown.
- Will Notre Dame’s corners be able to single cover the Lion wide receivers? PSU’s wideouts did not catch a pass, which is a remarkable performance by Notre Dame’s secondary.
- Can the Irish special teams continue their difference-making playoff performance? Jeter continues his timely resurgence. There were no noteworthy plays except an inexplicable fair catch by Zion Tracy at his own two-yard line.
- Which team will commit uncharacteristic turnovers? Both quarterbacks made mistakes but Allar’s blunder cost his team a shot at overtime.
Notre Dame will have to rest and recover from another war of attrition. Losing Knapp hurt because Tosh Baker was not effective at left tackle. The Irish trainers definitely need to bring Knapp back to health. Charles Jagusah filled in reasonably well for Spindler. Still, I suspect Rocco will be ready for the championship game unless they amputate his leg. Even then, he would probably give it a go.

i am still up drinking scotch and too wired to sleep. Gutsy is the right word for this team – whenever the sports experts say that Georgia or PSU or whoever have a better roster, the Irish prove them wrong. I am most impressed with how they can keep winning with soooo many injuries. Great coaching also – the players seem to love playing for Marcus and his crew. Never felt that way with BK. Thanks again ,John, for a great summary.
Mike says:
BK managed games in a boring way. Coach Freeman lets the team play football.
Bts says:
What a joy to see ND actually out coaching other teams and making meaningful halftime adjustments that actually work.
but mostly these coaches know how to get the most out of the players. Freeman has total buy-in from everyone, it seems.
Teddy P says:
Very nice summary that hits the key points.
“Gutsy” is an excellent word for this team and its coach. PSU looked like the much stronger team in the first half but ND kept finding ways to make plays, get the next man up, and never lost their composure. Greathouse’s ankle-breaking fakes on his TD catch were devastating.
This has been a great team to cheer for.
TumorGoByeBye says:
If you can march with a tenor saxophone with one leg amputated you can damn well play football. That aside, I am still reeling from the last week. The Love 3y touchdown can and will and should be on the ND highlight reel for eternity. He would not be denied. And the final sequence. Gray and Jeter, 2 guys who have struggled so much this season, end up as the heroes. Unbelievable.
These coaches and players are special. How they continue to get top level production from backup after backup defies logic. Thank You IRISH for enabling this Pennsylvania Domer the opportunity to go into work with a big big smile! GO IRISH!!! That was UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Jerrod says:
Not trying to nitpick but Gray has not “struggled much of this season.” He had a tough assignment against USC and struggled but that was it. I gotta come to this kids defense. He is asked to play man to support the scheme and does an excellent job.
TumorGoByeBye says:
Fair. But I think we can agree that to see these particular two guys get the opportunity to shine brightly was pretty damn sweet.
One Historian says:
One wonders what the coach at LSU is thinking.
CaliradoJoeIrish says:
Mediocrity would still be acceptable to the program if BK were still coaching….

He never struck me as much of a deep thinker.
If he is thinking about anything, you can bet it is entirely self-interested.

Who cares. He’s gone for good.

Great recap and prediction John! Best gravity defying two yard run I have seen as well!
This is the most mentally tough team in the nation and I think at this level it is what makes a championship team! Go Irish! 🙌
Joseph Casper says:
WONDERFULLY written report, Jvan. Thank you.
Greg '69 says:
What a game that was! 4th quarter was one for the ages! I thought Penn St hit harder and played harder than Georgia, and that Georgia game took a lot gas from the tank….but we found a way to win. And Jeter being back was the difference. Game and clock management in 4th quarter was great….coaches kept their heads on straight down the stretch….like MF said during 4th quarter, no panic. O line awful banged up, but who knows, if Leonard can get off the roller coaster with his passing game, this might be the year…..Go Irish!!

I’ll be the first to ask the critical question: John, are you going to the championship game?
John Vannie says:
Yes. I had already booked a hotel room in Atlanta last week. As Jeter’s kick sailed through the uprights I was online with Delta Airlines. We will have to find tickets so I may have to rob my granddaughters’ inheritance.
Dave O says:
Signing Marcus Freeman to a contract extension BEFORE we went on this national championship run was a genius move.
Mikeyoc79 says:
Early 2nd quarter gave me flashbacks of Bama, but these guys are different. And as a Pittsburgher, to do it to Penn State was, priceless.
Tony Yonto says:
John-Thoroughly enjoyed reading your column this morning. The FEELING of this win to me is reminiscent of the ‘93 game against Fla St. Kudos to Coach Freeman and his staff for doing a remarkable turn around after the NOLA game. The coaching and team chemistry that has been displayed has been nothing short of grit and determination. The ‘77 season comes into play as well in comparing this team’s destiny. Truly, this ‘24 team is writing it own memorable chapter in ND football lore, with one more game to go , NDNATION will be watching – INTENSELY! Go Irish. Tony Yonto ‘75
Jerrod says:
Reading your recap this morning Vannie gave me chills. So many clutch plays last night! These Irish keep insuring you get to do it again. One more preview and one more recap to go! I was thinking about all the ND Nation commenters last night when we closed it out. So happy for us all. So many things to say but too emotionally drained to do so. Buckle up ND nation, it’s gonna be a tense 11 days. I’m not sure I can survive a tight game in the NC. But we’ve got to enjoy the moment. Go Irish!
Dr Nick says:
Truth! I stood at home watching almost as much as I did in the stands at the ND-IU playoff game. 🤣😂😅
CaliradoJoeIrish says:
Jerrod, I’ll take a tight game with a victory over another NC blowout like that debacle against Alabama.
Tim Dearborn says:
Hell of a game that 5 years ago, we would have lost. This team doesn’t quit and Coach Freeman is a great leader for our team. Looking forward to seeing us win it all in Atlanta.

Hi John- thank you for the preview and post-game analysis. They are always a pleasure to read.
Marcus, the rest of the staff (mostly) and the players have made us expect to win again, no matter who we play.
Bald Eagle says:
1967 Grad here. I really feel great for the guys. They may not be the well oiled machine that Ara’s third year NC s were but they get the job done with guts. It was a nail biter but they came through. A team that is fun to watch and makes me proud to be a Domer. GO IRISH
James Diette says:
John:
I was at the game, and on the last drive of the first half, my eyes were focused on Rocco Spindler leaving the game. I never took note of Riley Leonard leaving after the same play. Then I took note of Angeli being the QB. I honestly thought it was a pre-packaged 2 minute drill. Completing 6 of 7 pretty impressive.
Despite having nice 30 yard line seats, it was difficult to follow the game as watching from our own living rooms. Penn State fans seemed to dominate the noise level, especially in the first half.
Kudos to Jake in Cali for your score prediction. You “split the uprights” on that call, just like Mitch Jeter.
Jake in Cali says:
Thank you James!! Irish have incredible heart!
Will says:
Jake, you’re the man. I’ve been following your comments all season and I’ve identified with your stubborn skepticism about whether this Irish team can really stand up to the elite. We’ve had so many disappointments in the past that it is almost impossible not to be a little pessimistic when we have to play the best teams in the country. Kudos to you for overcoming that skepticism and nailing the final score perfectly in one of the greatest ND games in the modern era. Any thoughts about the natty yet?
Jake in Cali says:
Will,
I truly appreciate your kind words! Thank You.. And I always look forward to your posts.
After watching the Georgia game, I saw a HUGE difference in the “fight” of the Irish! Something I haven’t seen in 30 years!! It was palpable. MF has them playing at a level that we’ve longed for since the Holtz days…It’s truly incredible to watch..
My initial thoughts on the Natty: I do not want to see Ohio St.. I think we match up better with Texas..
The Ohio St WR’S are scary good….
Happy 2025..

In 1973 a loss to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl propelled the Irish to an undefeated National Championship int the Sugar Bowl that same year. In 1977 a loss propelled ND to a Championship after our first and second string quarterbacks went down with injuries. In 1988 a team that was not expected to contend for a title, went undefeated with a great running quarterback who made just enough pass completions to give my alma mater another Championship. My hope is that this team continues to parallel the success of those teams. This is a wonderful, albeit stressful, ride. As the saying goes, Love thee Notre Dame. Go Irish!
Monty B. says:
Great win. A tale of two halves. My hunch is there was more happening in the locker room at half than just fiery pep talks. I’m not savvy enough to be able to pin point them, but it felt like there had been very effective coaching adjustments made at halftime. Any thoughts on specifically what they were? Whatever they were made us a different looking team in the second half and allowed us to find a way to win. We’re still standing and I’m grateful.
John Vannie says:
Denbrock made changes to the run blocking scheme and they cleaned up the pass protection.
Will says:
Excellent analysis, John. I totally agree that the Irish looked very tired in the first half. That lost day in NOLA really set them back in their rest and recovery schedule. And yet…they came out in the second half fired up and beat a very, very good team, the best team they have played this year. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at half time to hear Coach Freeman’s pep talk. Special kudos to 2 backups: Angeli and Williams. Without their spark, we don’t win that game. Final question of the year from me, John: is this a team of destiny? I guess we’ll find out in 10 days.
John Vannie says:
I don’t believe in the destiny theory but if they win it all I may have to rethink it.

V thank you for the season recaps of all the games and especially the playoff . At 82 I’m loving how this team finds a way to win. I knew we were going to get an interception and when we did it was at an opportune time. My son Danny told me when we made the playoffs that we would win it all . He said dad they’re going to do It; I don’t know how but it’s going to
happen. Go Irish!
CaliradoJoeIrish says:
Great victory for the Irish, thanks to their intestinal fortitude and the efforts of Love, Greathouse, and Gray. This was a very entertaining slobber knocker, but I probably wouldn’t be saying the same thing had PSU won. Did anyone notice that Jeter’s “hand of God” winning FG closely resembled the 1993 winning FG Boston College kicked to upset the Irish? For once in a long time, it was the Irish who won with a FG as the clock wound down! GO IRISH!!!

Thanks again Mr. Vannie for a great write up. We are living through ND and CFB history. Too many first to mention. I love these self proclaimed “misfits”. Their road warrior attitude would make Rocknes Ramblers proud. Old school is new school! Congrats to all the long suffering
Alums, how proud you must be. Heismans are nice but national championships are priceless. Onward to victory!

“Greathouse then drew a pass interference penalty at the two-yard line.”
That was Eli Rairdon who drew the PI.
Scott Friery says:
It is great to hear all the fan support at these games. I remarked to my wife that it sounded like a home game for both teams. Vannie… I agree about Love’s 2-yd TD run. That is now my favorite Love run. Man, the guts, grit, and determination to beat Abdul Carter for the score. There is no other 2-yd run that will ever compare. FOUR defenders couldn’t take him down!!
Was nice to see Greathouse have a breakout, career game, too.
Aneyas Williams is going to be something special, too.
GO IRISH!!!!! BRING THE HARDWARE HOME!!!!
Jim says:
John. I was thinking the same thing after Jeter’s game winner. That ball was definitely going right and then inexplicably in mid-flight veered to the middle to easily split the uprights. The Big Man upstairs was watching like all of us and said, “Not this time. This is Our Lady’s year!”
