Redeemed Christian Foils Trojans

A funny thing happened to USC on their way to tie the score with under four minutes remaining. With Notre Dame leading by 35-28 and the Trojans driving, cornerback Christian Gray made the play of the season. Gray had struggled most of the afternoon until he picked off a pass, kept his footing, and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Jayden Maiava led USC back on the ensuing series, but safety Xavier Watts did Gray one better. He intercepted another errant pass in the end zone and ran it 100+ yards for a 49-28 lead. The Trojans added a concession score with 13 seconds left for the final 49-35 margin. It was the highest scoring affair in this historic series.

Until these late heroics, defense had taken the day off in this classic shootout. The teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards and romped up and down the field all afternoon. Notre Dame opened the scoring after stuffing the Trojans on a fourth down pass. Jeremiyah Love rumbled through the USC defense until he punched it into the end zone for a quick 7-0 lead.

Jeremiyah Love scored a rushing touchdown in his 12th consecutive game

After the Irish held again, USC forced the game’s first turnover when Easton Mascarenas-Arnold punched the ball out of the hands of Jayden Thomas at the Notre Dame 37. Maiava guided the Trojans to paydirt to tie it at seven. The Irish tried to answer but the ensuing drive quickly stalled. Coach Marcus Freeman ordered a fake punt and ex-quarterback Tyler Buchner hit Mitchell Evans for a first down. This gamble led to a short field goal attempt by Mitch Jeter. He promptly clanked a 27-yarder off the right upright.

Notre Dame got the ball back once again midway through the second period. Riley Leonard hit Love in the flat, and the Irish tailback hurdled a Trojan defender for a 20-yard gain. Leonard found tight end Eli Raridon on the next play for a 12-yard touchdown.

Less than a minute remained in the half but Maiava went to work. Gray was victimized as Makai Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane caught passes as USC tied the game at 14 before time expired. USC left the field in a jubilant mood while the Irish appeared to be stunned.

The Irish displayed their physicality in the third quarter as they took the opening kickoff and ran over the Trojan defense. Jadarian Price covered the final 36 yards with a powerful burst to retake the lead. Maiava answered just moments later. He threw a 30-yard strike to Duce Robinson before a pass interference penalty on Gray set up the tying touchdown.

Leonard responded to the pressure. His 24-yard run set up a two-yard score that put Notre Dame back in front by 28-21. USC could not answer but got the ball back when Leonard inexplicably threw a wounded duck toward Kris Mitchell. John Humphrey intercepted for the Trojans and Maiava was back in business at the Irish 45.

This time, the Irish defense stiffened. USC could not convert a fourth down pass and the ball went back to the visitors. Price ran to the Trojan 23 before Leonard found Evans in the corner of the end zone for a 35-21 advantage.

As the game moved into the fourth quarter, Leonard and the Irish could not put the game away. Maiava led another drive that culminated in the second scoring reception by Lane. It was now 35-28 in favor of Notre Dame with 8:43 remaining. Once again, the Irish offense went into a shell and could not muster a first down.

USC began a march and it almost seemed inevitable that they would tie the score at 35. A 22-yard pass from Maiava to Robinson preceded a 23-yard run by Quinten Joyner. USC went for it all from the Irish 21 but Kyron Hudson slipped at the pylon. Gray made a one-handed interception, pivoted, and took off down the sideline. The stunned Trojans could only watch as a convoy of Irish escorted Gray to the end zone.

Christian Gray picks off a pass before starting on a 99-yard scoring return

Now trailing by 42-28 with 3:39 left in the game, Maiava refused to quit. He threw a 34-yard seed to Lemon to jump start another promising march. When the drive ran out of steam at the Irish 13-yard line, Maiava rolled the dice on fourth down. Watts stepped in front of his pass in the end zone and took off down the sideline. His 103-yard return looked like a repeat of Gray’s romp two minutes earlier, including the Irish convoy. At 49-28 with just 1:18 left in the game, the war was finally over. USC added a touchdown as Notre Dame was too busy celebrating to tackle anyone in the final minute.

A win in the Coliseum is always a glorious achievement. I would have enjoyed it more had I been able to avoid numerous seizures, strokes, and heart attacks. Al Golden’s defense returned to earth as the Trojans racked up over 500 yards, but the Irish never trailed. Notre Dame had 258 yards rushing, which doubled USC’s total until their final drive. Leonard was an efficient 17 of 22 for 155 yards and two scores. It was gratifying to see Gray rise to hero status after impersonating a goat for 56 minutes. Watts also showed why he is an All-American. His clinching interception came moments after he returned to the game from an injury.

Let’s review the answers to our pregame questions:

  • Will Notre Dame get off to a strong start? Yes. The Irish scored on their opening drive and never lost the lead.
  • Can the Irish secondary cover the dynamic Trojan receivers? Not very well. I lost count of the 30-yard passes that Maiava was able to hit. Leonard Moore played very well, though.
  • Which team will have the fewest penalties and turnovers? USC had seven penalties to three for Notre Dame. They were winning the turnover battle until Maiava’s interceptions cost them the game.
  • Will these strong, fast defenses continue to get stops on third down? USC was slightly better on third down but the Irish converted all three of their fourth down tries. The Trojans also went for it three times on fourth down but came up empty.
  • Which team will be able to run the ball most effectively? Love, Price, and Leonard dominated on the ground. USC’s Woody Marks went down with a concussion in the first quarter while Love was knocked out in the third period.
  • Will the Irish pass rush be able to rattle Maiava? Not at all. For a while it seemed as though Notre Dame was trying to jump start Maiava’s 2025 Heisman campaign.
  • Which quarterback will prove to be the most accurate passer? Leonard was accurate on short throws and had two intermediate length scoring passes. Maiava was far more impressive on the deeper shots, even while under pressure.
  • Will the Irish special teams have a positive or negative impact? Jeter’s missed chip shot was awful. Notre Dame was fortunate it did not figure into the final outcome. On the plus side, James Rendell nailed his most important punt attempt of the game. The Irish kick and punt coverage teams were solid. Finally, Tyler Buchner’s 23-yard pass to Evans on the fake punt was a thing of beauty. Freeman showed big cojones in calling that play in his own territory.

Notre Dame will have three weeks to prepare for what should be a home playoff contest. This will give Howard Cross, who did not play today, extra time to heal a high ankle sprain. Hopefully Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa will be ready as well. Initial reports indicate Love’s knee injury is not serious. Quite frankly, the Irish would be diminished going forward without their offensive MVP. Love was a monster before going down with 99 yards on 13 carries. Today, Price admirably picked up the slack with 111 yards on a dozen attempts. Both are much more effective in tandem.

We will now have to wait though the conference championship games before the final playoff matchups are revealed.  This will occur on Sunday, December 8. In the interim, it was satisfying to see Caleb Williams bring some Chicago Bears magic to the Coliseum. Alas, my heart bleeds for Ryan Day and Ohio State. Irish fans should also light a candle for Miami and Clemson, and the rest of the wretched ACC. It is a shame we could not add Georgia to that list. Yes, I know it is wrong to gloat, and I should go straight to hell for rooting for Michigan. Right now, however, I don’t give a damn.

    • I am thrilled we are going to get to the playoffs, but like John, damn near had my second heart attack. USC absolutely has some stud athletes- kind of surprised they lost as many games as they have, granted all very close. Still our defense left a lot to be desired for much of the game – lots of pressure on QB but no sacks that I can remember- need Cross for playoffs. And lack of field goals can kill us in playoffs. But I will take 11 and 1 any day. Yes , OSU and Miami ( almost Georgia, too) losing were bright spots. I also rooted for Michigan, called a priest friend and he absolved me of my sins – pennance was 3 Hail Mary’s and 3 glasses of Lagavullin 16 scotch. John, thanks , another fine write-up.

    • V , a masterful analysis of the game. Your final paragraph/ summary is a classic. I think a lot of Irish fans were pulling for Michigan. I’m so proud of this Irish team and how the coaches developed Leonard and the rest of the players into a team ! Hats off to the coaches and players and to Buckner who came back to the Irish and defeated our nemesis Southern Cal.

“Be the best that we can be and see where it takes us at the end of the year.
Like life it is now the journey, not the destination.”
Ed Christopher text message 09/08/24 after NIU loss.

  2. I had Irish winning by 7. However, I had a sigh of relief after 2 pick 6’s. Irish defense simply couldn’t stop the trojan offense late and we can’t kick a field goal to save our life.

    But, we can win!
Plus, there are no dominant monster team in the field of 12. This means ND can compete and beat anyone1
*as long as we don’t need a FG! But that’s a positive too = We’ll always go on 4th down and score more TDs!

Let’s get the 1st Nat championship since 1988! Go Irish!

  3. This game went pretty much the way I expected. I predicted an 18 point win; the final result was a 14 point win. When Woody Marks left the game with an injury, it was pretty clear that USC was going to go pass happy. Yes, they gained a lot of yardage through the air and scored some touchdowns, but the inevitable happened – U.S.C.’s young quarterback made two fatal mistakes and voila the game was over. This is the second year in a row that Xavier Watts has bedeviled the Trojans. They will be very happy to see him graduate to the NFL. While the Irish defense put the nail in the USC coffin, the ND offense had a great game. The 3 big question marks that we all had after the NIU debacle were Mike Denbrock, Riley Leonard, and the O-line. All three excelled in this game. Kudos to all three for learning from failure and improving in each and every game. Finally, the biggest question mark we all had after NIU was Coach Freeman. How many ND coaches in the last 30 years have folded under the pressure of the 3rd hardest job in America? Marcus did what Davie, Willingham, Weis, and Kelly were unable to do. He responded to adversity with grace, grit, and finally … greatness. Is it time to back up the Brinks truck and lock the man up for the next decade? I say absolutely!

    • ND fan in the South says:

I agree. Do not let MF go. Lock him up with a long term contract. We made mistakes doing this before, but this time the risk is worth the potential reward. He loves ND but he has a large, young family and needs security for them. Biggest fear in that job is burnout, but with a secure contract, the risk of high pressure burnout may be reduced.

  4. This was agonizing to watch until the final few minutes.. Love will go down as one of the all time ND great running backs and the spectacular interception returns were exhilarating after they nearly gave up the tying score.. need to figure out what went wrong on defense but i suspect the coast to coast road trips and wear and tear finally caught up to them. Miami losing along with the Buckeyes and Clemson was nice. The NIU debacle may have been a road to Damascus moment for ND in hindsight.

    • “Road to Damascus moment.” Now that deserves a HOF mention, if ever a phrase did. Thank you, CC. I just might steal that some day. Tip o’ the beanie to ya’!

  5. Was at wedding and watched game in Dublin. I don’t have anything profound to add. Your analysis, as usual, is more than adequate. Just wanted to be the first to chime in. Go Irish

  6. ND fan in the South says:

Our defense could not pressure USC’s QB. It was like he had a solid wall around him all night. A few times, we forced him to leave the pocket and he was ineffective. Our D will need to correct this in the playoffs. But, a win is a win, and to make it 10 in a row from our NI loss is most impressive.

USC is a very good team, the best 6 and 6 team out there, and they have an outstanding QB for next year. They were throwing at Gray all night until he, along with Xavier Watts, finally burned them to put the game away.

You just have to love this rivalry….Another classic game to etch into the CFB history books.

    • Yes. If we stay focused and get everyone back we can compete and defeat anyone. This is our year to get that elusive Natty we all have waited 36 long years for. I see the grit and love for each other unlike past teams I have heartbreakingly witnessed over the years. This team is different. Trust Love and Commitment is embodied with this roster top to bottom. Go get it Men. Our Lady of Victory Pray for us!! 🍀🍀GO IRISH!!🍀🍀

  7. Great write-up, as always. It was definitely a nail-biter until Gray went from goat to GOAT (well, not quite, but you get my point). That was Watts’ 5th INT this year, if I am not mistaken. What a great decision for the team that he came back for one more year.

For the guys that are “Out” for the season (eg Jugasah, Botelho, Morrison, etc), does that include the playoffs? Do we see any one those guys coming back this month or January if we go deep in the bracket?

You only go straight to hell for rooting for Michigan when they don’t play the Buckeye’s. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, even the Pope roots for Michigan.

    • OK, now you’ve gone too far, as that last comment about the Pope is WHOLLY uncalled for. The history between ND and that suckhole team that comes from the city that covers the portal to hell up in Meeesheegan, is WAY too long and darkly disturbing to allow ANY team to supplant that place as THE #1 target of ND hatred and disgust. It goes all the way back to when Rockne was HC, and was largely initiated by those two reprobate coaches, Yost and Crisler. Nothing any school, university, or team could do could ever replace that school’s team at the #1 position of hated opponents, not even the over-rated and overblown tosu bucknuts. (We should, however, note that Pedo State College holds a separate and solely-occupied place in the CFB Hall of Shame, and should ASAP be awarded the eternal death penalty.) Rooting for Meeesheegan should not call for going straight to hell, but it should place one in the front of the line for electro-convulsive therapy, and permanent residence in the nearest psychiatric facility for eternal monitoring and therapy. Rant over. Carry on.

  8. John – what a Game and i am right with you on the stress of watching this match up . As your game preview had said – ‘” buckle up ” because it is always a battle in the Colosseum vs USC. The Irish offensive line has to be the most improved since the start of the season as well as the tackling by the Irish defense especially the linebackers and secondary. Number 29 made the big play after being overmatched by the other side. Had to love the fact on 3rd and 4th downs the Defense was relentless. Time to regroup and get all healthy and keep the focus and momentum at the present level. Kicker may need some love as it would appear the problem is more mental than physical. Having endured heartbreaking loses over the years in this rivalry it was especially fitting to see ND play with poise and confidence. Thanks for a great season of previews and recaps. Right with you on the candles – what a fitting way to express it.

  9. I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that the ND defense took most of the day off until the interception returns. It seemed like USC amassed 800 yards of offense. The ND defense definitely took the very last USC drive off since they just quit and let the freshman running back rip off 25-30 yard carries which led to their last touchdown.

The depth and youth issues at CB finally reared their ugly head and maybe ND would not have made Maiava look like a Heisman candidate and SC receivers like first round draft picks if we still had Benjamin Morrison and Jaden Mikey. The pass rush was anemic most of the day. I hope this is just a one off and not a harbinger.

A first round bye is possible I just hope that ND doesn’t have to face cryin’ Ryan Day and the hapless Bucks who always seem to turn ND into the version of themselves that keeps losing to Michigan.

      • You’re right. I forgot that ND can’t be ranked higher than #5 for playoff pairings since they aren’t in a conference. And the high and mighty SEC thinks all 12 playoff teams should come from their conference.

  10. John – Your last paragraph was certainly a classic. Loved the sarcasm, particularly concerning Caleb Williams, who is an immature, classless and egocentric diva. I am very happy with this victory, as it is always a challenge to defeat the Trojans on senior day at the Coliseum. I was concerned about this game, as I have seen too many strange things happen there over the years, the worst of which was in 1964, where a phantom holding penalty on Bob Meeker negated a touchdown on a 1st and goal running play that cost us the game, as we never scored on that drive. And while the defense left a lot to be desired in this game, I’ll take the win. I have one footnote to the game. While it obviously had no impact on the final outcome, and while like you I was annoyed by the way we played defense on USC’s final drive, did you notice that there was a clock issue on that entire drive, where it took seemingly forever for the clock to restart after each first down, and where the runner/pass catcher did not go out of bounds? I would estimate that 20 seconds or more should have run off the clock, which would have negated the touchdown.

  11. Thanks for your hard work this season, John! What a satisfying end to a season full of anxiety and triumph. Injuries and underachieving opponents made this campaign weird, but Irish depth, conditioning, and coaching won out after the NIU debacle. ND got a break knocking Marks out of this game, but teams that tackle hard have better luck. Gray’s poise and athleticism at the goal line made up for an evening of hearing his name for the wrong reasons. I can’t wait to see the additional carnage in the conference championships but feel grateful Buckeyes and Wolverines will not infest Indianapolis this year. It would be justice for Coach Franklin to fail again at Penn State and the Big 10 to get a west coast champion in their inaugural expansion year. Go Irish! Get Ready!

  12. 1) While I think this team has a ceiling of making it to the final four teams (if that), I haven’t been this happy since about an ND football result since attending the win at Oklahoma in 2012 (A&M this year was close).
    2) USC seems like a materially better team with Maiava at QB and probably would have beaten Penn State and Michigan if he were playing.
    3) The last USC drive notwithstanding, it seems like the team plays harder for longer–and like a team versus a collection of individuals–under this coaching staff than under Brian Kelly. We take our foot off the accelerator a lot less. It’s fun to watch.
    4) It helps that this coaching staff calls plays that send a signal to the players that the staff believes in them (trusting 1:1 coverage, fake punts, going for it on 4th downs, etc).
    5) The Benjamin Morrison injury (which hurts much more against teams with good passing games), the field goal kicking, and the lack of a consistent downfield passing threat limit the potential this year.
    6) All I want for Christmas is the 5th seed. Please, please please…

Alway, Always enjoy your writing and analysis, John. As a fellow San Diegan, I’d enjoy/relish your perspectives on the Aztec’s FB program.

    • it’s not that tough to figure out what happened to the defense: lack of a pass rush. We play so much man to man on the edges that we’ll get burned eventually if the QB can sit back and pick us apart. We didn’t have a sack or really get much pressure. When they put the CB’s on an island we need to get to the QB. Didn’t happen. Hopefully 3 weeks of rest for key pass rushers will get us bank on track

  14. ❤️#501988🍀🏈💪 says:

Sloppy game overall with some bright spots! Rivalry or no rivalry game we made a bad 6-5 team look way better than they should have.🙄🤦
I hope they are recruiting and better kicker or go get an ex🍀 soccer player for the FGs or Extra Points!!! God I hope we don’t have to win games on the kicking game! 🙏
THIS team with all the veterans on it plays inconsistent at best!!!!!
ALOT was exposed by SC on how to beat us! I hope the coaching staff mends them in the 3 weeks we have off.
I worry that the coaching staff will not have this team ready to go in the playoffs!! There needs message to be sent to this team that will keep them focus!!!
Need to root for the 🦆s next week to secure that coveted 5th Seed Spot!!!!! FLY DUCKS FLY BRAT PSU!!!

  15. Michael J Murray says:

Living in Ohio all I’ll say is the quite next week at work will wonderful. Well execpt for me talking about what team we might play in the playoffs. Salt meet wound.

  16. Scott M. Friery says:

Vannie, logic would have it that I should be sitting right beside you in Hell for rooting for Michigan. However, I just can’t root for the Suckeyes. My utter distaste for them grew when I moved to Cincinnati 22 years ago. The OSU fans here are the world’s worst.

  17. Scott M. Friery says:

Forgot to add, I loved the back-to-back pick sixes!! Gray finally reloaded and had his mind back in the game. HERE’S TO OUR BELOVED IRISH!! What a way to respond to the early loss to NIU!! Time for the playoff!! They have earned it!

  18. John in your synopsis you left out one key issue with Golden’s defense. They bit on play action everytime that is why Maiavaa racked up so many yards. Leonard is still a work in progress 12 games in. Field goal attempts still a disaster.
Freeman is astute enough to address these in coming 3 weeks. Still a win at the Coliseum is always note worthy.

    • That happens when you try to cover man-to-man without safety help. They needed a pass rush and didn’t get one. Lots to work on during the break.

  19. Thomas Tomasi says:

I want ND to win the Nat. Championship to stick it in Jelly Belly Kelly’s ear. I still dislike the way he left ND and for him saying he could not win a Nat. Championship at ND. Evidently he cannot win a Nat. Championship anywhere worth talking about l

    • I want them to win for about 100 more important reasons but indeed getting back at Kelly would be 101. That said, he is irrelevant now and he did it to himself. Go Irish!

  20. John, thank you for the pre-game and post-game analyses each week. I know a lot of us keep checking to see if they’re posted yet.

The game should have been out of reach but mundane periods (sandwiched between great ones) by the Irish offense let the Trojans hang around. Perhaps they don’t trust Leonard (with reason) enough to pass a bit more, with innovative plays- regardless, we almost had a catastrophic failure in that 4th quarter. ‘Fortune favors the bold’ is tattooed on John Wick’s back- SC’s relentless passing almost made that a reality., Also, it seemed to me that when we blitzed early-on, SC figured out how to counter it.

This season has been fix what’s broken, week by week. And sometimes it gets broken again, like letting teams score at the end of half with hardly any time on the clock. The Irish work hard. I hope it keeps paying off in the playoff.

  21. Great job as usual Jvan, I was a nervous wreck and completely wore out my Rosary, but Our Holy Mother cam through for us. U hit the nail on the head about the pass rush, every time we got a good rush on Maiava he made wild throws, he was always looking for the sideline throw too. I think he’s a pretty good QB, but like all QB’s you pressure them and their weakness shows. I sure wish Leonard could get over his throws that make it look like he has no idea where he’s looking. I also which he would get over trying to summersault into the endzone, that’s going to get him on the injury list. With all that said, it was a great win, I was hoping the officiating would not kill us like it has so many other times playing out there. I felt things went pretty good for us in that area. The only time I really yelled at the TV was during the final drive, I was totally disappointed in the effort we displayed, they should have never got that last TD!

    • The defense was completely gassed and did not have the will to stop that final drive. I would probably relax a bit in the final minute with a three touchdown lead as well. Freeman would normally be upset but in this case he knew his guys gave everything they had all season. The travel and injuries took a heavy toll. Thank God for a three week rest.

    • The best part of that last quarter blitz was that ND took the game out of the refs’ hands. Being so far (14 and then 21 points) ahead assured that there was nothing the refs could do to effectively but surreptitiously aid the trojans enough for them to win. The stubborn refusal of our defense to allow USC back into the game, despite gaining tons of yards, was beautiful. In the past there have been far too many episodes where a closely fought game was able to be turned in USC’s favor by single ref call that came at a critical moment. Being up 2-3 TDs takes that opportunity out of the refs’ hands very nicely.

      • Caliradojoeirish says:

Well said!!! I always said that you have to put the game out of reach so that the referees can’t decide the outcome.

        • Which is why Freeman’s newfound approach of NEVER letting off on the gas pedal is a very hopeful sign for future victories and avoidance of referee nonsense, especially from the ACC refs, who whether the conference will ever admit it or not, work in small ways to keep conference regulars in their games against us whenever the opportunity presents itself.

      • ND fan in the South says:

It seems that our offense bailed us out this time. We were running through their defense, scoring on so many drives, punting only once?, and successful on going for it on 4th downs. No question the defense had to step up at the end to ice the game for us, but the offense kept the lead the entire game. To me, this proved to be a total team win.

  22. First I would like to hope that John is writing analysis about for two more games this year and two in January. I appreciated the “seizures, strokes, and heart attacks” comments because that is exactly how I feel with just about every ND game. However, not yesterday. I mentioned earlier this week that I had an unwavering belief that this team could not lose to SC.
I was concenred on where our defence went but wherever it was they took SC’s with them. At no time did I believe SC would win this game, I thought we would pull three scores ahead and stay but perhaps that was a too hopeful view against a real rivalry. A last min usless score removed 7 from the final spread. I, throughly enjoyed Ohio’s loss and also rooted for Michigan then dutifuly said my Mea culpas. I couple of thoughts on the game. 1. I saw Gray make two fantastic knockdowns and thought one of the PIs was phantom he was obiously playing aginst superior receivers glad he was rewarded with an awsome 99 yard TD. 2. Forgetting the defensive play overall, I could not understand not getting to the QB, even after rewatching it I don’t know if Golden held them back, their OL kept them out, or the QB was too elusive. I tend to think Golden was rightly afraid of the long passes. 3. Love and Price are better every week. 4. Riley is an ignigma to me. His runs are unexplainable, his accuracy is often perfect and as often perfectly awful. Thanks again for making Sunday mornings enjoyable.

  23. JVAN,

Can’t wait for your next column with a home playoff game!!

Thanks for everything you do and providing the best ND website anywhere!!!

      • John, I am among the many who look forward to your before and after columns. You always have a clever comment I share with friends. Really loved that last paragraph this week. We were at ND about the same time, my friend. Thanks, and all the best to you.

        • Thanks. I’m not constrained by a corporate overlord so I can say what I really think. Most writers who cover ND don’t have that freedom because they are subscription based. I do this for free so you get what you pay for.

          • Scott M. Friery says:

This is why I enjoy it, Vannie. I may not agree with everything at the time, but love the absolute truth in your analysis. Thank you, sir!!

    • No, none of my buddies wanted to drive up to LA. Those of us in San Diego don’t like it up there. I would rather go to the second playoff game at a warm weather location.

  24. SC is my favorite ND opponent….love beating the Trojans! My favorite game is ’73, which I saw from the south end zone….goal posts came down after that one! Found it ironic that Williams’ number retired yesterday after what we did to him last year. I was on hand in Coliseum when OJ’s number retired in ’68 game, and we know how things turned out for him. On yesterday’s game, not enough pressure on a good qb who got the ball out FAST to some 5 star receivers….hope we can improve on that in 3 weeks. Go Irish!

  25. Always enjoy your perspective, John. I waited all year for the consequences of losing our two best pass rushers AND two of our three best cover corners (remember Jaden Mickey was #1 backup for Morrison), and hoped it wouldn’t happen. Today we paid the price, against a Trojan roster deep with NFL caliber receivers. But the Irish offense put enough points on the board to bail out the D…and the exhausted secondary made two humongous plays at the end! No better feeling than beating USC, as I recall from my first victory celebration in 1965. On to the playoffs, and more celebrations!

  26. Thank you to John and all the contributors to this site. I look forward to the analysis and insight every week. It’s great to have a non-comercial forum where passionate ND fans can express themselves. Go Irish!

  27. It ALWAYS feels great when ND beats USC!! Especially in LA!! I am really happy that the Irish will host a playoff game in the house that Rockne built!!

John, I’m beginning to worry regarding Coach Freeman’s name being mention for the Bears job or the OSU job if Ryan Day gets let go. How nervous should I be and do you think Coach Freeman would leave ND this quickly? I pray to God he stays at ND for a long time. He really embraces everything about ND and what it stands for, plus he always says how much he loves coaching there. What do you think and thanks!!

    • Joe, I would not worry about the Bears. They are cheap and have completely dysfunctional ownership. No up and coming coach in his right mind would take that job.

As for Ohio State, I don’t believe they will fire Ryan Day. If they do, however, I have no doubt they would come after Freeman. Notre Dame has already begun to work on a lucrative contract extention for him. I believe he wants to stay in South Bend. He will have leverage in negotiations with ND to get any reasonable concessions they can give him to compete in this environment. Besides, he has six relatively young kids and it would be difficult to uproot them.

      • Knowing what we have learned about MF and his family, I am hoping he and his kids would like for them all to attend and graduate from ND, and if several NCs occur along the way, what a legacy that would be!!

  28. John, thanks for your diligence and insight in preparing these pre and post mortems of every Irish game. I appreciate your objectivity, your lived experience as an Irish fan during the same time span that I have lived and died each Saturday with Irish fortunes, and most of all your appreciation for the cultural treasure that is Notre Dame football. I sense that we are on the cusp of a new golden age with Coach Freeman. After 3 plus decades of mediocrity, frustration, and disappointment, I think that we finally have our man. He has 3 things going for him: 1) he’s a great recruiter who seems to understand today’s young men, 2) he seems comfortable with the new realities of college football, and 3) he has an AD who will support him and not get in his way. Anyway John…it’s been an intriguing season, one that you have enhanced with your knowledge, wit, and wisdom. Hang in there, my friend. I think this ride is just moving into a new gear.

  29. Southern Cal is also my favorite opponent and the 1973 my favorite game all-time, with the ’73 Sugar Bowl a close second. I expected this game to go down the the end, as oftentimes happens in the Coliseum. I could not watch the game live but had my son text me the scores. He was very judicious in his updates so as not to spoil a night at the theatre. When I watched the replay I was happy not to have watched it live. I would have had at least 4 heart episodes. The sequence showing the ’74 game fifty years ago was expected and reminded me of the pain I experienced on my senior trip. Regardless, I never want to see this rivalry end. I have a number of SC grads who are my friends. I have never sensed that the Michigan v. OSU animus exists between us and the Trojans. My second favorite fight song belongs to USC. Hoping that this coach and team can seize this special opportunity.
Finally, a thank you to John for his insightful reporting and analysis. This is my favorite webpage to read about my favorite team. All of the commentators make very good observations. John’s last paragraph reminds me of the witty commentary my Zahm roommates would make.

  30. One Historian says:

IMO Freeman has made his bones as the ND HC. The next step, of course is the NC. This year? I’m afraid not, although they will give a good account of themselves. They have recruited very well, as shown by their consistent ability to bring in ‘the next man’ and he performs up to snuff.

PLEASE – DON’T go to the transfer portal for the next QB for next season – let Angeli and Carr fight it out!!

My pick is Texas – ANYBODY but Oregon. Why – Just 1 reason – Those are the most nauseating uniforms in all of college football. (Plus – I just don’t like ’em, both of which reasons add up to – more than enough.)

JV – I must admit to more than a bit of schadenfreude in re OSU – UM. I expected OSU to win easily but as the game wore on, I found myself – AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGMENT – rooting for the skunkbears. The riot at midfield after the game? Boys will be boys. Do I blame anyone? No. 1) UM had no business doing what they did, and 2) OSU was right in defending their home turf. The fact that other teams have done it, including at ND? No excuse.

  31. The last shreds of skepticism were burned away by this win. USC was smokin’ hot, and they really wanted this win in their precious colliseum. For the Irish to go in there and come out with the win with some aggressive offense and ultimately a pair of pick-sixes lifts my heart to a place it hasn’t been for awhile! Ohh baby!!! Leonard has visibly improved over the season, when was the last time we could say that about an Irish QB?

  32. Does anyone think the Irish’s performance against USC, and Penn State’s nailbiter vs. Minnesota, will be enough for the CFP committee to boost them over Penn State? I’m cautiously optimistic but not emotionally invested!
