Three Yards and a Cloud of Controversy

Notre Dame’s heroic attempt at a game-winning drive in the final seconds came up empty when an apparent touchdown by Corey Robinson was negated by offensive pass interference, and the Irish fell by 31-27 to Florida State in a hard fought contest on Saturday night. The Seminoles had staged their own comeback in the second half to take their first lead of the game with 7:39 remaining, but Everett Golson brought the Irish to within three yards of victory before the rug was cruelly pulled out from under them on fourth and goal. The loss dropped Notre Dame to 6-1 on the season, but by any objective measure the Irish should not drop in the polls and must still be considered a viable playoff contender.

The teams started the game like two heavyweight fighters. Notre Dame was the aggressor, and landed the first punch late in the first quarter after surviving a botched fourth and one attempt near midfield. Golson hit Robinson with a short touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead with 2:10 remaining in the first period. The score seemed to awaken the Seminoles, who quickly marched downfield to tie it less tan two minutes later when an Irish blitz was too late in getting to quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Irish continued to pressure Florida State with short passes and effective runs, but the Seminoles reached Golson on a third down throw to cause a wobbly pass that was picked off. Notre Dame returned the favor on the very next play when Winston’s desperate heave was intercepted by Joe Schmidt at the FSU 31. Golson hit Robinson again a few plays later from nine yards out for a 14-7 lead. The teams then exchanged field goals before the half and went into the locker room with the Irish leading 17-10.

Winston caught fire immediately in the third quarter as Florida State adjusted to the Irish blitzes with quick passes over the middle. The hosts tied the score with disturbing ease at the 10:37 mark when Winston hit Rashad Greene for a ten yard touchdown. Golson immediately brought Notre Dame back to retake the lead at 24-17 with the help of Will Fuller, whose 12 yard score capped an 83 yard march. Once again, however, Winston brought back the Seminoles in short order to even the count at 24 with 3:38 still remaining in the third period.

As the game entered the final period, Kyle Brindza hit a 46-yard field field goal to give Notre Dame a tenuous 27-24 advantage, but the defense had no answer for Winston’s quick, accurate throws and the glue-fingered Seminole receivers. A short run by Karlos Williams capped a go-ahead drive and Florida State had its first lead of the night at 31-27 with 7:39 remaining. An exchange of punts left the Seminoles deep in their own end, and Sheldon Day lead the Irish defensive effort to keep them there. The Seminoles were forced to punt with 2:53 left and the Irish took over at the FSU 49.

Golson quickly ran into intense pressure and found himself in a fourth and 18 hole. Miraculously, the senior scrambled and found Robinson wide open for 20 along the sideline to keep hope alive. A pass to Fuller and a 12 yard scramble brought the ball just seven yards from victory with under a minute left. A pass for no gain, an incompletion and a short throw for four yards set up a fourth and three with the outcome on the line. The play to Robinson appeared to be perfectly executed for the winning score, but the officials decided that Prosise was blocking downfield rather than running a pass route, and flagged the Irish for interference. It was a sickening reversal for Notre Dame, and certainly a call that would not have been made had the teams been reversed.

Let’s review the answers to the pregame questions:

Will the Irish offensive line be able to protect Golson? The protection was generally good and the line played quite well. There were pressures and batted balls, but Golson managed to put his team in position to win.

Which team will be more effective running the ball? Notre Dame, behind Tarean Folston’s 118 yards, was the more balanced team by a wide margin.

Will the Irish defense avoid missed tackles that extend drives? There were a few errors in this regard, but nothing too costly except for a missed tackle by Matthias Farley on the first FSU score. The Irish generally made the Seminoles earn every yard.

Which team will win the turnover battle? Both teams had one interception, although Notre Dame was only one of three on fourth down gambles.

Can Golson match the accuracy and efficiency of Winston? Winston was outstanding in the second half, but the gutty and improvising Golson matched him right down to the wire.

Will a big play on special teams impact the outcome? A kickoff out of bounds by Brindza jump started Florida State’s first scoring drive, but these teams played to a draw for the most part.

Will Notre Dame gain a measure of respect at the national level regardless of the outcome? We’ll see when the polls come out, but the Irish earned a place at the table. The exception to this assertion may be classless Seminole coach Jimbo Fisher, who could only gush about his team afterwards and failed to show respect to his opponent in any manner.

The Irish will take a well-earned week off before resuming work against Navy on November 1. The team continues to improve as the offensive line comes of age and the defense remains free of major injuries to key players. This loss was a bitter pill to swallow, however, and one that will be remembered by Notre Dame fans along with other notable games where questionable calls by home conference officials left a stain on the outcome.

  1. Listening to Fisher made me vomit. “We are a family, character, integrity, blah, blah, blah.” You are right– a classless man– in a very dirty college football world with few schools left untarnished.

  2. Fisher is lower than pond scum. When his comeuppance comes — and it will — it will be richly deserved and oh so sweet.

  3. Totally agree about Fisher. Self absorbed, aloof, and classless. It’s not very hard to see why Winston is the way he is with this guy as a coach. Win, lose, or draw I hope I never see ND coaches or players embarrass the university the way these two have done to FSU. Keep your heads up Irish!!!

    • My thoughts! Fisher came across totally self absorbed, not able to mention one positive thing about the way Notre Dame played. That struck me along with his fawning over Winston. Totally classless!
On another note, after listening to BK in his presser I have a question to ask. He stated that Prosise made the play in precisely the way he is coached to make such a play, and we coach according to the legal rules of the game. If that is the case either he needs to relearn the rules or the official blew the call. Which is it?? Do need someone to clarify.

      • lol actually, the ACC now says it was called on Fuller (because pics clearly show procise being held on the outside of his shoulder pads while his arms are down), which makes it even more confusing because he barely touched Darby! Too boot, the ref on THE OTHER SIDE called it! nothing we can do about it now, but hope for a rematch in the playoff

  4. I was surprised that coach Fisher had not comment on the great effort by Notre Dame. Most coaches always comment how well the opponent plays. Granted Florida State played very well in the 2nd half but Notre Dame surprise everyone.

  5. I agree with Brian. I can’t remember such classless comments coming from anyone who should be setting a positive example for collegiate football. If his team is, as he put it, a family, I pity anyone growing up in that environment. With people like him grooming players for the NFL, it is no wonder that that league is in situation that it is in.

  6. Mark napierkowski says:

Fisher showed himself to be a bumpkin hick in every sense. And that love scene between him and Winston was one for the vomit bag. No respect for the opponent. Vannie nailed it – the Irish proved themselves last night. This team can play with anyone. It seems evident the program is back on it’s feet. The Irish have a great opportunity to win out, and wouldn’t it be sweet irony if we met this FSU team again…I would lay money on the Irish.

  7. Yeah, I pretty much lost any respect for Jimbobob Fisher, too. Even Pete Carroll was very complimentary towards ND following the 2005 game in which the “Bush push” handed the game to USC. Jameis is a great QB and threaded the needle more times than I would have liked last night, but he’s a bandit with lots of baggage, and Jimbo and FSU know they cannot win big games without him which is why he’s held to such a low standard.

IMO, the questionable decision to go for it on 4th down at midfield in the first half decided the game. That led to an FSU field goal which means instead of 31-27 it would have been 28-27 and ND could have just run the ball in the read zone to run out the clock and kicked a FG to win 30-28. Even if ND had won I would feel the same way.

This loss stings, but ND has nothing to be ashamed of and outplayed the Seminoles and statistically dominated the game. They proved that they can play on the big stage and still belong in the playoff discussion.

    • I liked the going for it on 4th down, the kid from FSU made a great play, but the Irish pick that up at least 80% of the time. If the situation was reversed, I’d have been hoping FSU would punt.

A punt may have given FSU poor field position, but they still may have scored. ND stopped them a lot, but it wasn’t like this was a 6-3 Alabama-LSU snooze fest, there was a good chance they could score whenever they had the ball.

I think it was debatable whether ND should have punted with 5 minutes left on 4th and 8, though that one did work out well. Had it been 4th and 3, they definitely should have went, but 4th and 8 made it a tough pickup. Even with the good punt though, FSU could have ran out the clock had they not just tried to run and gave Winston a chance to throw the ball.

It was a great game, with a lame ending. ESPN can talk all they want about it being a correct call, but not one would have had a second thought if no call was made. It takes two to tango, and the FSU players were engaging the ND players. I guess ND needs to be better actors, according to Keyshawn Johnson.

  8. Michael Ahern says:

I said in this post the other day that I thought it was going to be a Notre Dame moment and it was until the official made that call. Tough, tough loss but I thought the Irish played superb football. Kidos as well to Brian Kelly who called a masterful game. As for Fisher, what can one expect from a pimp? Good time for a bye- no letdowns please and Beat Navy!

  9. I am upset, but also excited that ND is back at the top, where top schools need questionable calls from referees to tip games their way. It’s been a long time since that has been the case. Go Irish, welcome back to the elite level of college football!

  10. The problem I have with the call in at the end is who was the penalty on. If you call it on Will Fuller than I agree that was pass interference. However CJ Prossise is absolutely being mugged in the same process so you have to call holding on the DB. Offsetting penalties lets do it again. If you threw the flag on CJ from the beginning…that’s one of the worst calls ever made and that ref needs to be looking for a new job today!!

    • I looked at the replay many times. The call was on Fuller, not Prosise. Neither committed any infraction. If there was any violation, it was defensive pass interference on the FSU CB who was impeding Prosise’s route. That said, none of the action off the ball had any effect on the pass coverage, which was completely blown by FSU and led to an easy touchdown to Corey Robinson and what should have been a Notre Dame victory. Call was a travesty. Hopefully, we will see FSU again in the playoff. Revenge will be sweet!

  11. I know this is Sunday and it is spent on focusing on our NFL teams. But I want to say how proud I am of ND last night! Thats what we grew up with in the mid 80s to the mid 90s! Filled with that quiet attitude and not intimated! GO IRISH!!!! Rest up and lets get ready to to go 4-0 in the last 1/3 of the season! Text you guys in two weeks unless something major happens!!. I’ll leave you with this……..

    Notre Dame Football Speech: http://youtu.be/TNB2CqYrd-o

  12. The flag that decided the game was a travesty yet predictable given the game was played in Tallahassee. Taking points off the scoreboard at such a critical time for an obscure, half-baked penalty was unjustifiable after watching the Seminole offensive line hold the Irish front line and linebackers all night without consequence.
Another exceptional performance by Joe Schmidt and Will Fuller. Cory Robinson has come into his own!
The Fighting Irish truly are a top 5 team and should hold their heads high for the guts, execution and class displayed on Saturday night.

  13. It might have been a hometown call but I remember last season when MSU was flagged with a couple of pass Interference/hometown calls that resulted in victory for ND. One goes around comes around!

    • Did you actually watch the ND/MSU game last year? Their game plan was to interfere and bank on the refs not calling them all. They couldn’t match up with our receiver corps.

  14. The game was decided on a pass interference. Not the call on the last play of the game but the one two plays before. The defender made contact with the ND receiver while face guarding. No attempt to look for the football. If the officials did not have the guts to make that call then they should have not made the call on the last play of the game.
I told my wife early mid way through the fourth quarter that those officials would not let ND win the game. I was totally right on that call.

  15. Notre Dame has had so many BS ridiculous calls go their way over the years I’m shocked to hear anyone in ND community is offended. ND legacy in many cases is supported by officials giving the same type of BS calls to ND and subsequently they miraculously BS their way to a win they shouldn’t have gotten. All Kelly is doing is trying to set up for another ridiculous call to go your way at some point later this season. ND fans need to get a clue.

      • You’re joking right? Is that a rhetorical question? Notre Dame fans are delusional if not downright stupid who argue the point. There are so many over the years that only a totally blind as a bat fan wouldn’t recognize the fact(s). It’s ridiculous the number of peculiar breaks you’ve gotten over the years. And not just at the end of games. More importantly, especially if you know anything at all about competition, is ND had plenty of chances outside that ONE play to win the game. If you fail to get that it’s just another delusional fan moment and clearly your youth league football mentality. Only example I’m going to waste my time with you for is Stanford two years ago in South Bend. From ESPN:

“And after three years of getting pushed around by the Cardinal, the Fighting Irish pushed back, winning the most important shoving match they’ve had all season.

        Or did they?”

Hmmm…wonder what Stanford fans were saying after that peculiar call?

        That is all.

  16. Do you folks ever just lose a game?

Can you do so without whining about refs, opponents, tv commenters, fans, etc.?

Every week i can count on my nd friend’s bottomless list of excuses. We have a bingo board for him.

It’s a game. You lost. Half the teams do every week. Deal with it.

    • Hmmm. I was wondering what became of the Michigan fans this season. Welcome back – and my condolences on your losses.

    • That’s funny Bill because the same can go for fans who are not ND fans. The excuses why ND won was because of the refs or opponents or tv commentary. So that must mean you guys have a bingo board too for the excuses that ND won. As for ND fans complaining about games is no more than another fan and their team or in your own words….bottomless list of excuses! Deal with it yourself!!!!

  17. Come on guys. It was clearly O pass interference. You cannot block prior to the pass on a downfield pass. The announcers had it called right off the bat.

    • How do you block when the defender initiates the contact and holds you outside your shoulder pads? It’s hard turn around to look for the ball when the DB has you in a bear hug.

  18. It was planned all along by Jimbo, who admitted talking to the officials at halftime. The FSU receiver deliberately held him in place so that the ref could throw the flag, just as planned.

  19. Joe Schaefer ND '59 says:

In the 1972 game with Missouri, the game was won by Missouri in the last minute by its fullback
leaping over the line of scrimmage. The play was ruled a touchdown. Only problem was, he did not
have the ball. As he was making his leap, the ball was spinning around on the muddy ground in the
Missouri backfield. It was signaled a touchdown anyway. After the game, Ara was asked for his
reaction. He said, “…that man will never referee another game in Notre Dame Stadium..” Who was
that man? Well, it was Jerry Markbreit, then a Big 10 ref and Marketing VP at Playboy Enterprises.
He later went on to ref in the NFL for something like 25 years. Memo to Coach Kelly: make a list and
check it twice! I believe Dan Devine was the Missouri coach!

  20. 20/14 12:57 PM
This was the worst call I’ve ever seen in my entire life. It was so blatantly obvious that Fl State blew the coverage, and not to mention engaged, locked- up however you want to call it with the ND receivers first. You can not say with positive certainty that ND was blocking the defenders, they had no time to even move before they were bumped at line of scrimmage. They were fighting to get off the ball, that is perfectly legal. The only reason they called this a penalty was because Jimbo Fisher planted it inside the refs mind at halftime like a little kid and the refs called it because they favored Fl state. Total BS and a disgrace to the game. Not one Espn announcer noticed the first TD and said OMG that’s an obvious pick play that wasn’t called, they simply said great TD ND! On the last play if you notice, they get all excited and say ND Touchdown! Not one mentions the “pick” until they actually see the flag, then they want to go back and review film of all the plays in the game to fit their agenda and say oh yea that first TD was an obvious pick. We have all seen nd games and Kelly runs similar plays like this. In his five years of coaching not 1 pick play has ever been called in 5 years! So either the refs have missed thousands of pick play calls against nd and just decided to get it right against florida st right? Or they decided to listen to the great jumbo Fisher. Either way it makes the refs look pathetic. We all know who really won that game.Notre dame dominated the stats. Notre dame is the better team. If that penalty would have been called for us I would have said wow that was horrible call. I’m being objective. Like I said worst call to ever decide a game in my lifetime

  21. This was totally the wrong call by the official! How can it be pass interference when the DB has you tied up I a bear hug like Mike Coffey says? I watched that play over and over as

  22. Dang, Hit enter to quick….. Anyway I watched this play over and over again as I had it recorded. This is a designed play and the whole FS defense was not ready for the play. They were running around like they didn’t have a clue. When the wide outs went to run their routes, they were held. That’s it plain and simple. That should have been good touchdown and ND wins. Too bad the official was a local (FAN) and decided to throw a flag that couldn’t be reviewed just to control the outcome of the game. That’s ok though! We are proud, We are ND and we will be back to see FS in the play offs. I guarantee. Bring your best when we meet again in South Bend the next time they play. Too bad it won’t be for a while. That kind of chip holds strong and long.

  23. The head of officiating for the ACC neither agreed or disagreed with the pass interference call in the waning moments of the game saturday night. However, he did say that it was a judgement call on part of the officials working the game. Well first of all he isn’t going to throw any of his officials under the bus for blowing a call that could and would decide the outcome of the game even though that saying it was a judgement call was his way of saying the officials blew it.
Officials should never be part of the equation in deciding the outcome of a game. That is why the players play the game. If that same play or something very similar is run in the first quarter and it is not penalized then it should not be penalized in the last quarter. That is inconsistency and that is what coaches don’t want. I’ve watched that play over and over and over and the only thing I see is Prosise and Fuller being engaged by the defense off the line. The defense is initiating the contact. How can you penalize the offense when the defense is initiating the contact. Prosise is being held and Fuller is stopped almost dead in his tracks when the defender puts out his arms.
Lastly, as the head of officiating stated “it was a judgement call”. Ok, waning seconds of a major college football game, #5 vs. #2 ball inside the 10 with seconds remaining and #5 going in to take the lead and win. A judgement call……….well any official who knows what he’s doing is only going to make that call if all 90,000 people in that stadium including the offical are 1000% sure there is a foul on that play. For as much as the offical said it was a penalty it could have been a no call too. I don’t think Jimbo Fisher would have been jumping up and down and 80,000 FSU fans screaming you missed a offensive pass interfernce call if no flag had been thrown. Sometimes what officals see isn’t always what happened.

  24. In my humble opinion, even though I don’t believe in moral victories, ND won that game. They showed they are back and on the way up. These things are going to happen since, clearly, there are people who hate ND. Like Kelly said, what they have to do is win these things early.

  25. Fearless Flea says:

The contact on both ND receivers was initiated by the FSU DB’s. ND 7 was trying to make an inside move away from FSU 3, FSU 3 moved into ND 7 to cut him off. FSU 3 was not trying to move outside to cover ND 88. He was trying to jam ND 7’s inside move. ND 20 was jammed at the line by FSU 8.FSU 8’s first move was into ND 20. FSU 26 was head up on ND 88 at the snap, but was blocked by his own DB’s. The call was unquestionably wrong and should never have been made. There was no attempt to block by the ND receivers. All contact was made by the FSU DB’s. The ACC officials stole the game from ND.

  26. NDBonecrusher says:

Mmmmm…this humble pie is tasty. Vannie I was the first to say your pick was incorrect and it almost was. Almost. Once again you were right and I was wrong.

The lads gotta be hurting after that, but take some measure of resolve that they can hang with the champs. Suspensions, retooled line, young defense, and all. There’s a lot of football left and although I said on Coffey’s post that the loser will not enter the playoff, if ND wins out I think they will. That’s a stiff “if” but based on what we’ve seen, certainly possible. This team has not peaked yet.
