is my guess without digging it up. The 25 person limit per class started right about when Holtz entered ND.

I seem to recall that we gave out about 32 scholarships per year, as limited by the school and not the NCAA. During much of Ara's Era freshmen weren't eligible and 5th years were available only for significant injuries. Simplistically, he would have around 100 scholarship players available to play before freshman eligibility and relaxed redshirts vs 85 today. The 1973 limit was 105 scholarships total.


There was an intermediate limit of 95

I think it was around when I was a student (82-86), although I'm not sure of the exact dates.
