In reply to: Next year's starting lineup  posted by NDLAW88

I've been thinking about this during walks/jogs as well, but every time I did found myself asking a lot of questions or having to note conditionals ("...if this happens").

- First, overall team thought: MM keeps bringing up in her pressers that it usually comes down to "reounding and turnovers" with this current team. And she has reminded us that this team is going to be scoring in the 60's (without Anaya, make that the 50s).

So whatever line up is out there needs to address rebounding, not turn the ball over and shoot better. Particularly from long(er) range.

Second overall team point: MM likes consistency in her lineup. Don't think she'll mix and match starters. Anything could happen after the whistle.

By position:

POINT GUARD

- I think everyone is still trying to sort out (or forget) the s+*tstorm that hit before the early signing day in regards to PG. The alleged yo-yo nature of Caitlin Clark's recruiting, the flip-flopping of Deja Kelly's OV's to ND and NC and Haye's immediate commital stirred things up, for sure. It is what it is at this point, but I don't think Alasia is the second coming of LA. I think she's a talented combo guard who is currently a look-for-her-shot first PG who will have to take a step up to become a D1 PG.

- As such, I think there's got to be a job sharing until Alasia rounds into form and/or MM scores a major 2021 lead guard.

Who is that?

- Like NDLaw, one would've thought Katlyn Gilbert. Good enough handle; has second-most assists after Marta and has a decent mid-range jumper to keep defenses honest. On the other hand, I have not seen a "whole floor approach" from her in either transition or half-court. Could be orientation. Might not be.

- Anaya will do whatever she has to do to win. But she was our strongest rebounder prior to her injury (8.1 per game) and is tough inside, like Jackie Young. Are her talents better used elsewhere? Or does Abby's return fill the need for a tough defender, rebounder inside guard presence?

- (Yet Another) Grad Transfer to mentor/stem the tide. I'd recommend against this. Time to let the core part of this team figure it out amongst themselves and gain chemistry.

- A surprise: I'm well aware that MM has said that Alli Campbell would not be playing point and right now guard (particularly if ND goes three guards) would look like her position. But she is still the lead guard in HS and controls, well, everything. BBall IQ is supposedly off the charts and she can drain it from anywhere. Maybe a Mabrey redux?

GUARDS

- Will ND go three deep at guard? Or kind of hybrid it (I think Sam is such a stretch 4 she is, for all intensive purposes, a 3.)

- Destinee (.37 overall shooting, .26 from 3-pt. land), Katlyn (.37 and .21, respectively) have been inefficient. In the case of Destinee, streaky. Katlyn looks like she's wearing down.

Will they be better served with more peoples and playing less minutes? And a more efficient half-court set? Or, are they just not primo shooters?

- Anaya shot .46 overall, but only .13 on threes and was mostly inside. Need to see more range there.

- Abby's presence will add smarts, toughness, rebounding and defense. While she didn't shoot a lot as a frosh, the stroke wasn't bad. Don't see her as a starter, but do see her having a lot of minutes.

- Campbell. If she can shoot from outside consistently, start your happy dance. Can she play defense at this level? Probably best as a sub, unless PG situation is desparate (see above).

CENTER

- Is Mik OK? As many have pointed out, she seems to be laboring going up and down the court. Is this a remnant of the (latest) injury? Does she need an offseason to work on strength and quickness? I think this will determine a lot on playing time and where they play.

- How is Nat Marshall rehabbing? ACL's can take awhile (see Bri Turner). Will she be available? How available and at what degree of effectiveness?

- In any case, I would recommend keeping Mik down in the low post, like MM did with Brianna. I think she's more a finisher (witness the .57 FG %) more than a facilitator. Keep her close to the hoop.

...which leads to ...

FORWARD

- If Mik is not at the elbow, who is going to the hub of the offense? Well, I thought Sam would be that person but even in the Fordham game (before Mik's infury) she was positioned out further. Even after Mik went down, it was Danielle or Katie Cole. Sam is not the elbow.

- So, if you look at it from that perspective, that makes on think of Maddy Westbeld. Her game and pedigree would seem to underscore that match. And she can rebound and play with her head on her shoulders.

A PROJECTED LINE-UP (as of now, with option to changes depending on answers to above)

- PG: K. Gilbert (with Hayes spelling, hopefully)
- Off Guard: Anaya (with Destinee as sixth person. Could be flipped)
- "Small Forward": Sam Brunelle
- "Elbow" Forward: Maddy Westbeld
- Center: Mik Vaughn (Dani or Abdur Rahim to spell. Nat is ???)

Abby and Alli will spell everyone from guard to "small forward/wing"), depending on the need.

I think the key to all of this is that the team has to work more cohesively as a unit, both offensively and rebounding. That's one reason why I'm thinking Maddy is in there. She screams glue to me.

I pretty much agree with your post. I think it is

unlikely for a freshman to start at Notre Dame, and even more unlikely for her to make a major contribution, so we cannot look for saviors in the freshman class. Look at the freshman who have started for Notre Dame in the Diggins and post Diggins era (the Irish dynasty, so to speak). Diggins started and was a major contributor, but she was a top 3 recruit and of course phenomenal. Jewell also started (4th ranked recruit) and was great on defense for a freshman, and she contributed on a solid team. Lindsay Allen also started as a freshman, moving into Diggins' slot on a loaded team. While "only" a 25th ranked recruit, Lindsay had extensive experience leading team USA and teams could not focus on her because of the stacked team. Brianna Turner (top 2 recruit) also started and contributed. She was healthy and it showed. (I always wonder what her career would have been like at Notre Dame if she had been plagued by injuries in her time under the Dome.)

So we have 4 freshman starting from the 2009-10 season until last season (2018-19): that's 10 seasons! I know why we had to start Sam this year, but she needed to be a focus, and didn't have the anonymity of the other freshman (though Diggins sure attracted attention). That has made Sam seem pedestrian at times, but Sam is an amazing shooter. We need her to get open looks, but this team has had SO MANY needs, that really none of them has been adequately addressed.

So back to the starters, by position:

PG: The big unknown. It will probably be point guard by committee, as I fear there is no one for this role. Alasia Hayes reminds me of Mychal Johnson. Muffet thought Mychal was going to come in and be a defensive stopper, and I think she may have finally realized that role in her senior season, but then that season was lost before it started (ACL) and she deferred her final year of eligibility. Alasia does not shoot that well, but what worries me more is her lack of command on the floor. Especially as a freshman, I do not see her as our PG next season. So the committee will be Gilbert et al. I do not see an obvious choice, so anyone who can reliably bring up the ball will get the majority of the time there and with the Princeton offense, it should be OK for a year. The advantage of Gilbert or another shooter in that role is that it keeps teams honest on offense, unlike this season. What about a grad transfer? Only if an amazing PG comes available.

Ok, I'm not going in order. Next is POST: Barring an injury, it has to be Mik. Posts always take time to develop and usually blossom in their junior campaign. If Mik is injury-free, I see a very strong season for her. She needs to work on her FT jumper so she can wonder out from down under to draw the other post out from under the basket. Then she can shoot the jumper or drive if the post comes out at her (she's adept at that) and when she's at the FT line a guard can post up or drive unimpeded (Anaya?). Subs are Abdur Rahim and possibly Danielle Cosgrove, as she has looked better lately.

FORWARD: Sam. She can defend a 4 but on offense, she will roam. She has a great stroke (and RANGE) from 3 but needs to not rush it. She also has a good mid-range and short jumper. So versatile offensively, and we need to get her quality looks. She will also work as a decoy to set up other people. She needs to be involved offensively, as she is our best weapon. Maddy Westbeld probably will not start, but I expect her to log a lot of minutes. She is similar to Kat in many ways, including her recruiting ranking and Kat logged 17 minutes/game her freshman year. She is more rugged than Kat and our team needs that, so I expect 20 minutes/game.

SG/WING: OK, it's 2 positions, but I'm covering them together, as they are really interchangeable the way ND plays. Peoples, Walker, Prohaska, and Campbell will log the most minutes (assuming Gilbert starts at PG).I love Abby's toughness and attention to detail. She will execute exactly the way Muffet wants her to, but she needs to shoot when the shot is available. I trust her passing, defense, court awareness, etc. I only doubt her athleticism/size and confidence in her shot. She could certainly start and be a major contributor.

Walker will only get better. The less attention she has on her, the more comfortable she gets in the Irish offense, the better she will be. I expect much better shooting percentages from her next season.

Peoples needs a better outside shot and of course she has an injured shoulder. Remind you of Brianna Turner, anyone? She needs to stay fearless and work on her shot. I love her defense and toughness.

Campbell won't start but will earn minutes by hitting the 3 and not being a liability on defense. Not picking on Alli, but defense is very tough for freshman. Alli is cerebral but will have a lot to learn.

I expect very little from Natalija Marshall next year. Sure, her ACL may be healed, but she still won't trust it right away, and she really doesn't play her size yet. She'll need to be dedicated in the weight room and I view her as a project (much like we should have viewed Danielle Cosgrove, who under normal circumstances, should not have played much until her junior year).

Skylar didn't start her freshman year, at least not at the beginning.

In her freshman year, Skylar started 30/35 games. I would

Lack of 3 point shooting kills this team

that and the turnovers - and could be a real problem next year. Gilbert doesn't seem to have that range yet, although hopefully it will come and Destinee is indeed (ahem) streaky. That's why I think Campbell starting may not be farfetched (almost typed "a stetch"). I also think there may be more flow to the offense and better chances for Sam to get open 3's (and better driving lanes for Destinee and Anaya) with the combination of Maddy and Anaya on the floor rather than a traditional center.

Great post, btw..

I think even McGraw's good teams have had a problem

with turnovers that has never been adequately addressed. They were good enough however, to overcome those issues. This team is not good enough to do that. Combine that with being outrebounded all the time and it is amazing they have won the games the have won.
