Berhalter was on XMFC this week and it was a pretty interesting conversation. I will defend US Soccer on this: if they lose Dest, it isn’t on them. He has been part of the program for years. They’ve given him loads of opportunities. The whole Jonathan Gonzalez situation soured people and, as it turns out, Gonzalez’s father lied about the communication he was getting from the US staff. The Mexico side orchestrated all that nonsense.
Berhalter is right that clubs are the ones responsible for developing the players, but when he says it’s USMNT’s responsibility to give them the international experience, the next question should be “then why aren’t you getting the young players in Europe here for that experience before WC qualifying?” The MLS guys are either going into playoffs or dead legged from a full season, while the Europeans are just hitting stride. Silly.
